In support of the Recent view
-
This topic is to promote the use of the "Recent" tag in your icon bar at the top*. Most of us are used to the old Kinja way of ordering posts in the descending chronological order of their creation; so, that's how the default view is set here on this forum. But, if you so choose, clicking the Recent button orders the topics by most recent post, as the Maker intended, in traditional forum style. This is the origin of the tradition of "bumping" a topic to the top of the list to renew a conversation, which we used to emulate in Kinja by changing the date of a post (but can't do here).
Ordering by Recent posts allows you to see immediately which are the conversations that have been going on since you last checked in, which saves you time hunting and scrolling down the list, a plus for those on mobile. It really takes very little time to get used to. Worth the effort.
Bonus content:
Check out the categories icon to the left, which gets you to Overland, Oppolitics, and other sub-forums as they become available.
And if you didn't already know it, the new medical icon on the right is a quick link to RallyDarkstrike's essential user guide to posting mechanics.
*the views expressed herein are entirely the opinion of the joker who wrote them, and do not reflect any policy initiatives from the forum administration.

If there are no news topics, I go to recent. I think a mix of both is good.

Military Time!
Also I noticed we're now operators instead of being in a squad

The extra icon for the user guide squashed things a bit so I removed the groups one as it's not is une for anything right now.

Yes, but are we smooth?

I would like to take this moment to take a roll call of Oppos who were also on Photography, and ask if any of them want to see it added here as a topic. The only ones I know made the jump are @CB and @Agrajag... Just trying to see if there's enough to warrant a special section.
...I will be dropping this question again as the opportunity presents.

@smallbear Myself, Agrajag, and SonicGabe are the only Photogs who made it (at least, the active ones). Most of the others are over on Backtalk. At this point, there's not really a need for a photography category, we have a tag in any case.

Let me know if you ever want it. I'm happy to see the content in the main feed anyway.
-
@cb wondered. I hadn't seen many people.
-
@smallbear They're all over here.
Man, the fracturing of Kinja communities blows.

No problem. Just know that if you ever want a space for that interest, we are happy to provide.

@chariotoflove Is there supposed to be a difference between this "Recent" button, and selecting "Sort by" - "Newest to Oldest"? Because that's already the view that I go with.
Looking at them side-by-side, the only difference I can see is that "Recent" appears to mix pinned topics/threads among the rest instead of keeping them pinned to the top like I see in my sorted-newest-to-oldest-view.
-
@urambo-tauro one option is for most recent topic/top thread while another is for most recent reply in any topic. I think.
-
@Chariotoflove, FYI things are "Newest to oldest" by default (I hate it, luckily it's smart enough to remember sorting changes if you log in). This does give you the posts with the most recent replies first. Sorting by "Topics: Newest to oldest" got me what I wanted (this is one of the few things kinja did well). Sorting by most recently reply buries interesting new posts in favor of comments deep within existing threads that are frequently very low value. (especially to be people not involved in the thread). It also makes it much harder to ignore posts you aren't interested in if they are getting a lot of replies.
-
@cataphract I think you're describing the difference between "Sort by- Newest to Oldest" and "Sort by- Topics: Newest to Oldest".
The "Recent" button, as near as I can tell, seems to be a shortcut to a version of "Sort by- Newest to Oldest" that ignores the pinning of topics/threads and sorts threads/topics by the most recent post/reply, in a strictly chronological manner.
-
@facw And you do have the choice to quickly toggle between the two.
-
@facw Things are set to topics being newest on top. The recents bottom or the sort newest to oldest pull down gets you newest comments on top.
-
@chariotoflove If I go to an incongnito window (not logged in) I get "Newest" rather than "Topics: Newest" by default, so it doesn't seem like the default behavior is what you think. But yeah, it's plenty easy to change.
-
@urambo-tauro It has the small difference that "Recent" doesn't include pinned posts at the top (unless they have a recent reply presumably), while "Newest to Oldest" does.
-
It's funny, since Kinja had no DM functionality, I took to commenting on an old post of someone's to have a "more private" conversation with them. Guess the "recent" thing kinds of kills that (and we have DMs now, so...)!
