Ungrayed by Torch (2013)

Shameless flattery!
Me: How?
@Arch-Duke-Maxyenko: Grovel. Then grovel harder. It worked for me.
Me: Torch, your kid is ridiculously cute. I really enjoy your writing and was super-happy when my fellow Jalops and Opponauts helped you find your stolen Beetle.
On a completely unrelated note: would you do a guy a solid and de-gray my comments?Jason: All that flattery should at least get you un-greyed for a bit! Thanks!
LOL! Who remembers who "ungrayed" them? I can't recall if I ever got a "heart-click"...

Man, I'm so thankful @FTTOHG captured comments in his archive! Between him and @Jb-boin, I think pretty much everything's been captured for posterity.
-
I think it was Andrew that ungreyed me. Twice!
-
@ibrad Such a good dude. Hope he has much success moving forward.
-
@davesaddiction I don't think I ever got ungreyed. I had authorship on Oppo and had already pretty much stopped going to the FP by the time shit hit the fan on Jez and they made the grey thing happen.
-
@davesaddiction I think Patrick was the one who popped my cherry.
-
Hold up, 2013???? Did they remove the "greys" feature at some point and then add it back in later on?
-
@smallbear I forget, but there definitely were some stumbles along the way. Part of the "gray" thing was to keep bots and spammers' comments from showing up.

Hmm, I seem to recall Jez was having a problem with people spamming the comments with rape GIFs. IIRC they started writing articles something along the lines of "We have a rape GIF problem and Gawker won't do anything" and crossposting that frequently everywhere else. Greys showed up shortly afterwards.

I might have been ungrayed by Bobbin' Head Orlove, but I'm not really sure.
I started a campaign of "aggressive wittiness" to angle for getting starred maybe two weeks before they did away with stars, so that didn't work out for me. As such. -
After that great greying of everyone when pending replies were reintroduced, Hardibird. Prior to that, I dunno, I know I was ungreyed in 2012, but haven't posted on the FP in ages, 2018.
-
There you go, @Smallbear - grayed vs. pending.
-
@davesaddiction I honestly don't remember, think it happened like the first day they launched the grey/ungrey format. Was Roy Wort still around at that point, or had he already left?
-
No clue, but looks like he was gone before Tiger/Kinja.

@davesaddiction I forgot who un-greyed me, but I remember who re-greyed me. Bradley Brownell is a weasel.
-
Ballaban ungreyed me with my very first comment. He posted a Karmann-Ghia in his "Little Car, Big City" series that he did when he was the weekend guy. I told a story about the convertible Ghia that my childhood neighbor had in his garage, that all the neighborhood kids got to play it.
That Ghia has never run in my entire life, and I'm 39. It had always been in the garage, with a "bad engine." There was a supposedly good engine in the hardtop Ghia behind the garage. That one looked like it had been at the bottom of the ocean for decades, it was so rusty. Even David Tracy wouldn't have been able to lie to himself that it was fixable. The rusty one went to the junkyard when I was in high school, but the convertible stayed in the garage.
What I lamented in my comment to Ballaban, was it had been moved outside, and was just under a loose and under-sized blue tarp. Thankfully it has since been moved back into the garage.

@shop-teacher Wow.
-
Pretty sure it was Kristen....one of the question posts and I had a good answer. Only a few years ago. Re-grayed this week by Shilling. Really hits the entire spectrum of Jalopnik writers over the past few years in that pair
-
@davesaddiction I found it! Thanks to googles, because Kinja's search engine is turrible.

Kristen Lee
Countersteer. This article specifically:

@shop-teacher Think he'd sell it do you?
-
The person who ungrayed me didn't say anything. No idea what the comment that inspired it was.
-
@davesaddiction Probably not. He has four sons. The younger two were four and six years older than me and my best friend (we all lived next to each other and nobody had fences), but they were still nice enough to play with us a lot. None of them were really "car guys," but they played in that car too and may want it. I suppose there is a small chance, since he's known me literally all my life.
I was REALLY glad when I saw that the Ghia got moved back into the garage.
-
@shop-teacher Maybe an agreement to buy it and sell it back to any of his kids that might want it for what you paid (plus costs of future parts/labor and some small $/hr for time you put in)? Just spitballing.
-
@davesaddiction Maybe, but I really don't have time or money for a project car right now anyways. If it was still outside, I'd definitely make a move. Since it's in the garage, I'm content for now to let it sit there for now.

As near as I could figure, I believe it was Tavarish who ungreyed me back in 2015. I checked my notifications one day to discover that I had been "followed" by Jalopnik right around the same time that Tavarish recommended and replied to a Transformers joke.
