DOTS: The Varsity Never Disappoints!
-
The Varsity in Atlanta has a long and rich history with the automobile and even on a regular Thursday afternoon you're sure to find something interesting parked outside.
For those unaware, it's the world's largest drive-in fast food restaurant. Here's a link to a repost on Drive Tribe of a donk show hosted there from two months ago.
Today was no exception and a number of fascinating machines were in the parking lot. First up, this beautifully resto-modded Chevrolet Chevelle resplendent in an unapologetic shade of orange. Since I saw the owner I asked permission to take photos, as is good carspotting practice.
If these badges are to be believed this is an SS model. There's probably more fakes than real ones out there at this point however so I'd be curious as to what y'all think.
I love his wheel choice paired with that color. Such a striking vehicle.
What's even better is the Mopar style food stripe along the front. I don't usually see such a thing on GM products but I do love the way this Chevelle pulls it off.
Moving on, we have a lot of trucks.
Specifically, an unusual Chevy Colorado.
The precision of lining up the vinyl graphics with the bed cap is impressive. It's extremely well done.
It's unusual to see such an attention grabbing wrap job on what appears to be an otherwise unmodified personal car. I like it though. Zebra stripe all the things!
And now for the patina'd pickups.
Now this is an interesting pairing. A 10 year old Sierra with one half of it surface rust colored and the other half brown parked next to a 15 year old Silverado with a similar hodge podge of body panels on the horizontal surfaces.
I'm honestly torn as to whether I'd take the obviously crash damaged Sierra or the obviously hail damaged Silverado. Well, I guess I don't know that they aren't BOTH Sierras.
Finally, some non-trucks!
This old Integra has fought a battle with the sun and lost but is in otherwise shockingly serviceably condition. I NEVER see them with interiors that complete.
I didn't want to check the transmission choice because the construction workers these cars belonged to were returning to the parking lot. Must have worked out a deal with The Varsity.
Oh boy, 2008 has arrived and it has not aged well. I wish I could have better documented exactly how terrible this car was but I was getting some suspicious glances.
Well, The Varsity's parking lot really ran the gamut today between desirable and deeply undesirable. I'd be curious as to which of the beaters you'd take.

oh man I haven't been to a Varsity in a minute
-
@s65 This is not just any Varsity, this is THE Varsity. The OG Varsity. Not that I particularly enjoy eating there as it's not very gluten free friendly.
-
That '69 is good looking with the custom paint/stripe. It's a bit like the '68 SS but different. Also reminiscent of the Camaro Bumble Bee nose stripe.
-
@looseonexit I'm not exactly familiar with any of the things you mentioned. Did the Camaro ever have the nose stripe as well? It's a good look but one I usually associate more with Mopar.
Too bad it is an auto though. At least it was a factory automatic.

The Mopars have butt stripes. The 67-68 Camaro did have the nose stripe as an option. There is also one that doesn't fully wrap.
It does seem to be very hard to find manual muscle cars.

@looseonexit I must have got my Mopar and GM crossed. It is an iconic look but I couldn't remember who did it the most. Stripes on the nose that curve off to run along the side of a car are seriously underutilized.
Well a lot of them were sold new with slushboxes and America has only fallen more in love with the automatic. My friend has a notchback Mustang that he modified but his base had an auto. He swapped it out for a 6 speed manual out of a VW Golf. I suspect most of the autobox muscle cars are now rocking more modern units because those 60s ones sucked a lot of power and torque. It's the ones that clearly used to be manual but now aren't that burn my bacon.

I'm impressed by the stripe-matching on that Colorado's cap, but the door handles...why didn't they do the door handles? It also desperately needs black bowtie badges to complete the look.

I had the EXACT same thought.
Bow tie, doorhandles, and mirror caps desperately need some white and black stripes to complete the look. Even the wheels kinda match but no doorhandles!
-
@whoistheleader The wheels are pretty on-point. I can forgive the mirror cap since, from the driver side view, the cap lines up with the white stripe. But those door handles...
-
@four94 Maybe the owner was worried about greasy hands wearing the vinyl?
The mirror cap also lines up with the black plastic surround which in profile would appear to be its own stripe so it should be black if it's all one color.
-
2nd gen Integra is best Integra.
-
@interstate366 Agreed. The proportions, the everything, it's just so right! That one desperately needs some bodywork and a paintjob but I bet it still runs great. I wish I could have got close enough to notice the transmission choice.
