Mmmm, MR fluid. A high-tech blend of "iron filings in oil".

Craigslist will push me, and I'll say no; read my lips: no new projects.

@davesaddiction Have you seen switchable magnets before? I learned about this sorcery last weekend. It's a physical switch that turns magnets on and off. No electromagnets involved.

The guy who made this is now working with a company to create woodworking products using the switchable magnets to hold the tools fast to the tablesaw.

Never discount the possibility that you might live through it.

                          Story time.

When I was in elementary school, my science teacher did a class experiment to teach us. It was the time the X-Men 2 movie came out.

There is a scene where Mystique drugs and pumps a security guard full of iron so Magneto can escape. My teacher wanted to show with the right amount of liquid, food, mixed together you could create or bring out the iron fillings. I forgot what combo of juice, liquid, food, etc. works, but one specific combination worked.

This isn't particularly new, look up magnetic bases for things like dial indicators and even work holding for things like surface grinders (mag chucks). I've even seen them in welding supply places for switchable corner magnets. Pretty handy, though.

In all my years, this is the first time I had seen them. The world is an amazing place. What's blasé to one person is new and amazing to another!

Hmm. Now you've got me wondering and I can't go check because it was almost 20 years ago and the plant is in china now.

I don't think they were electromagnets though. I'm not talking huge wrecking yard cranes, more like 10000kg gantry cranes. I don't recall any wiring but you might be right!

Here's a little one I found. This one only takes 1200lbs but I'm not imagining things at least!

It was a big deal because I used to spec out baseplates for machining fixtures and they'd basically be 4" thick 2m square hunks of steel that are difficult to manipulate without any kind of lifting points.

I was at a magnet factory in Connecticut last year for a tour...
The scrap magnets they manufacture are electro-magnet and the lifters are physical switch, as you say.
I'm most familiar with magnetic dial indicator bases that millwrights use for setting up and holding dial indicators. The good ones have a physical switch on the side of them.

Even the cheap ones do nowdays. I have a princess auto (like harbour freight only Canada) indicator holder and it has the switchable magnet.
