End of an Era

Haynes is to stop publishing print manuals. It's sad because my own manual from 2005 for my truck is never far from hand. It's well used and I almost feel like I should buy a backup copy and keep it in it's plastic wrap until mine is destroyed.
-
Love to use computers with greasy hands
-
What will I do without tiny b&w photos with no surrounding visual context??
-
They'll have to take the book out of their logo. What a sad day. I don't want to get my computer all greasy and I don't want my phone under the car with me.
-
Gotta get that garage only chromebook going.
-
Tis a sad day indeed
-
@carsoffortlangley Nooooo!
-
@carsoffortlangley That's a shame. I have other factory and restoration manuals for the Camaro but the one that's all grease stained and missing its cover is the Chilton's. Those type of manuals are just extremely handy and convenient.
-
I even have/have had a couple pages printed and laminated lol. Guess I'll be printing everything before the job now
-
@carsoffortlangley As a confirmed luddite who reveres the printed page, I find this sad. Also, there are plenty of things for which screens are just not the best fit.
-
Can this year just end FFS!!
Every week I gotta pour one out. -
@forsweden And my phone. A generous film of 5-30 on the glass will only improve the experience.
-
@exage03040 Pouring out more than I'm drinking these days
-
“Installation is reverse of removal” dammit, now I have to learn to read backwards
-
I have a stained Haynes manual for the Mustang (a holdover from when I bought it for the Cougar). For the 4Runner, they didn't make one, so I spent the $20 for a 2 day subscription to TIS and downloaded the entire manual (in hundreds of separate PDFs, thanks Toyota!). I still like printed though, so I'd like to print the entire thing out.
-
@carsoffortlangley I wonder how much of this is less Haynes giving up on books because print is dead, and more because people, by and large, are just not fixing their vehicles anymore.
-
I wish I had a Haynes manual for my T-bird. The only manual I have is a digital copy which, despite being installed and paid for, my computer keeps making me jump through hoops to prove I own it every time I try to use it. Digital repair manuals are no fun.
Strangely though, when I first saw this headline, my first thought was "What will I gird my loins with now?"
Different Haynes...

@carsoffortlangley There are times, like when I am sitting in an airport, that I only want a Chromebook.

No big loss in my view. I've only found these manuals to be semi-useful at best... often leaving out important details.
-
@carsoffortlangley I use my friend's AllData account.
-
Oh man, that is sad. Used to be part of my ritual when I boguht a new car: the first weekend, go buy oil, a filter, and a Haynes manual for it.
I have one (along with several other manuals) for the MG, but not for the others. I should probably grab one for each now, while I still can.
-
That stinks. We all know both Haynes and Chilton's have their weaknesses. I've been known to buy a manual from both for a car since where one manual is weak, the other might have more detail. Losing an option is no good.
"Use the online option" you say. Well the online option is $35 a month or $399 a year. Sure, that gives you access to ALL of their manuals. That's great for a professional garage, not so much for the DIY crowd. What I don't know is what the online access gives you, and whether you can cancel after a month. If it lets me download what I need to PDF and I can cancel after a month with no penalty...honestly they're gonna lose money on me. Download a bunch of manuals in a month, then cancel? That's cheaper than $25 per book.

Not sure what it's like for the 5th gen, but there are plenty of 3rd gen manuals floating around the internet.
I actually bought a set of two manuals from someone once that had printed out and bound them fairly nicely actually. It was for '02 though so all of the manual transmission stuff is missing unfortunately. Otherwise they are convenient to have around.

How long did it take you to find your ratchet?
