Another Hobby In The Books
-
Right as most of us were sent home in March, I bought a 3D printer to print PPE for a local hospital. Once that was done I started kicking around other things to do with my 3d printer. I had been introduced to die cast customization through Oppo/LaLd previously but re-stumbled upon it while looking for new 3d print projects. In I jumped, with the goal of doing a 1/64 2002 to match my 1:1 1502. I did 15-20 other cars first putting myself through the usually "Tripper lifecycle of a hobby".
Stage 1 - This could be a neat hobby/excessive levels of research
Stage 2 - Buy everything required, try it all out
Stage 3 - Relish in your new found cure for anxiety
Stage 4 - Go absolutely fuckin nuts, definitely get in way over your head, take on
more than you could ever do
Stage 5 - Loath the new source of your anxiety
Stage 6 - Push it all into a corner and take a break
Stage 7 - Tie up loose ends and move onI'm not completely done with diecasts and definitely not done with modeling/3d printing. However, the completion of the 02 was my original goal when I adopted this as my main hobby for a few months. I've got one other model to finish up before I move on to fixing holiday decorations.
Anyway, here it is. Bummer that I only had semi gloss clear as I did a real nice job laying it on. The details aren't fine, but I had to use a single strand of wire to stuff like the different sections of taillight.
Happy Thursday!

That looks awesome, great job. My level of customizing has been mainly to use a sharpie on small details.

Wait that 02 was 3d printed? Awesome. But yeah I'm pretty sure there's no way to use a 3D printer that doesn't involve some major frustration-they really are fussy at times.
-
@spacekraken Nah, nothing 3d printed on this particular model but the wheels and tires on the header image were 3d printed.
This pic was before I realized I needed larger wheels in the rear. I ended up printing like 30 wheels before I got it right!
I have an 70's FJ in the works that I might finish that has a lot of 3d printed stuff on it. including offroady wheels and tires.

@tripper That is usually how I am with hobbies except the cycle repeats itself on a few key ones. I'm always into a certain car, obtaining the example I want, modding it then drive it a while until I find the next one to obtain. Same with my sound system. I buy, build, or modify my speakers/processor/amp then be happy with it until I get the itch.
BUT this is also the reason I have a 3D printer coming in on Sunday. Started wanting to build a MPCNC but realized for 80% of the cost of the printed parts, I could print my own and have a 3D printer afterwards.
I went with the Ender 3 Pro with the upgraded metal extruder and glass bed. What do you use for modeling/CAM/Printing?
-
@snakesm13 Also have an ender 3 all hooked up at this point. I have to be honest I probably would not have gotten started with it had it not been for a bunch of oppos helping out. @Shop-Teacher @Slant6 (I know I am forgetting at least 2 others)
There is a lot of dicking around required with them, especially right off the bat. Hoping to spend more time with it in the colder months. I used Cura for slicing and Fusion 360 for design.
-
@snakesm13 Interesting. I'd also love to make a MPCNC. And I just bought a 3D printer as well. (Currently have a few other projects in the way before I can get to setting it up, though.

@baconsandwich Yeah the Ender 3 Pro was on sale black friday for $188 bucks. V1 Engineering sells the already printed parts for $165... It takes a little over 2 spools of PLA to print so that's ~$40 bucks. So for $63 I have a 3D printer, experience and MPCNC printed parts. At least that's how I justified it to my wife.
I'm going to cut my teeth on some speaker adapters I've modeled for co-workers Power Wheels and amp enclosure.

@snakesm13 I got my Ender 3 V2 for $336 CAD, including shipping, a roll of filament, and a free Raspberry Pi. Such a far cry from the original Replicator 2 I used in university. It cost something like $2200.
I've been keeping a list of things to print. Hopefully soon I'll be able to start getting some of them printed!
-
@baconsandwich I was torn between the Pro or V2, that was a great price for the V2 though.
-
@snakesm13 Yeah, I was amazed. For the longest time I was debating between the Ender 3 (any version) and the Prusa Mini. But the bigger build area and much lower price ended up winning me over. A coworker of mine saw the deal, and knew I was wanting a printer. I was prepared to pay $400 or more, and this ended up coming with some freebies. Hard to say no to that!

@tripper Thatโs awesome!

Really nice!
