ICYMI: hubless bike
-
Apologies if repost
-
@boredalways that is a weird idea... but pretty cool. I love the huuuuuuge gear on the read hub
-
@boredalways
Finally, someone does away with hubs! -
Maybe I missed it, but how does he stop?
-
@mr-ontop he's mounted a disc brake opposite the cassette, inside the rear triangle of the frame
-
@boredalways Soooo, single speed then....
-
@sn4cktimes Look at all those gears!
You can also see the brake rotor on the back of the cassette/chainring stack (stop the rear wheel by stopping the chain rather than a rim brake). -
@boredalways I think this is the first time I've seen a hubless wheel since I first read about the one Sbarro designed.
-
@boredalways That's pretty awesome.
-
It looks cool but doesn't appear practical or efficient. Each hub now has 6 ish wheel bearings where before it had two each. Those bearings are also a bit more exposed. More like a fun design experiment.
-
@boredalways That is awesome! Gotta get a decent skater to bust a hippie flip through the back wheel while he rides by.

Really? His pizza isn't that good, hopefully the bike was better

@66p1800inpieces I agree. It’s a fun design study but the chain solution seems a little silly and I doubt there is any efficiency or weight gain.
Hubless bikes have been studied for aerodynamics purposes but I believe added rolling resistance and cost always made the design suboptimal. Especially since rotational and translation drag for high end aero wheels is pretty low.
-
@facw ahhhh. I shoulda clicked through/embiggened. I just noticed the one side in the other pic. That’s pretty cool then.
-
@sn4cktimes To be fair, it's not connected to the derailleur there. I didn't actually watch closely enough to see if he ever hooks it up. He clearly intended to, but the chain routing looks difficult.
-
@trivet There's a Sbarro pizza chain? Please tell me they use these as delivery vehicles:
-
@nowhere It's what makes a Sbarro, a Sbarro
