Oppo Internet Upgrade....
-
I had my internet upgraded this morning. Look at this SPEED:
Mind you that speed is when I'm plugged directly into the router.
With the 5GHZ wireless, it drops to this:
And at 2.4GHZ wireless...
These numbers are from after I upgraded my router firmware - which got me a bit more speed at 2.4GHZ and maybe 10-20% more max speed at 5ghz.
My current router is this:
https://deviwiki.com/wiki/TP-LINK_Archer_A9_v6.xNow I have to look into whether a router upgrade will improve things so I can get that 600+Mbps over wireless...

@manwich *cries in comcast*
-
@manwich It's one of the few things I don't mind about having had to move back in with my mom recently. She sprung for the top internet package last summer since there were multiple people in the house doing telepresence stuff.
This is on wifi. End result is that my laptop just downloaded a 1.2 gig game update in about 20 seconds.
-
@manwich Still doing pretty well here:
Though my upload is low, that's supposed to be ~900Mbps, and I used to get that. Maybe they are getting crushed by WFH traffic or something.Good to be in new building with some competition. Comcast has a gigabit plan as well, but it's not quite as good of a deal, with lower upload, and without modem rental included (I'd buy my own, but if Verizon is cheaper with included modem and wifi 6 router, that doesn't help the Comcast value proposition either)
-
@manwich I wish I had a good choice. I get xfiniti and my upload sucks and I don't have an alternative.
-
@manwich ooo pretty much same as mine....considerably faster than i need....nice for downloads tho
-
@manwich Just for fun, I checked my speed on my work laptop (wireless 802.11ac, behind their VPN and firewall) and my phone (wireless 802.11ac):
Which makes sense. Interesting that the upload speed didn't change. I'd have to boot my PC to see what the wired speed is, maybe later.
-
You all suck
My work laptop (WFH over a VPN)
I feel this is mocking me
At least my home PC speeds are a bit better
-
@manwich Off hours I'll get in the 925 range up and down. It's good to live in a Verizon FiOS/fiber area.
-
@trivet Yeah, the VPN kills it. Is that wireless or wired?

In theory, I'm supposed to get 1Gbps download and 30Mbps upload. But I suspect my router might be holding things back a bit. It's definitely holding things back on the wireless side.
-
@manwich It should be criminal to offer such low upload speeds. That's so low I wonder if acks are even keeping up with downloads.

Turn off the VPN and redo the test. When connected to VPN, generally your download speed is limited to the same as your upload speed.
That's why I wanted to upgrade... I went from 10Mbps upload to 30Mbps upload... for not much more money than I was already paying.

Not sure. I'm with Primus who rely on Rogers for the 'last mile'.
But I checked Rogers' offerings... and the fastest they offer in my area also has an upload speed of 30Mbps... just like Primus.
So it must be some sort or line or back end limit to where I am.
-
@manwich It's usually that they know most people only look at download speeds when buying, so they dedicate as much bandwidth as possible to download speeds. Usually the case with cable internet providers, fiber based services usually have an easier time offering symmetric connections.
-
@manwich I just switched from Comcast to T-Mobile 5g internet. Half the cost and super speed.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch I was stuck with those fuckers forever. It was nice to get out from under them.
-
I was on DSL at home for the past few years, but our rural electric provider recently ran fiber and I sprung for the gigabit package (and then a too-expensive mesh router to make the most of it).
My wife's back to WFH - she's glad for the changes!
-
@manwich I get pretty much my full connection over wifi now. It's just me, so I really don't need more than this. I put a Deco mesh in my house that works great.
-
@aremmes See, I don't know if I'm just in a favored spot, or if I'm unaware of the alternatives, but I really haven't had cause to complain about Comcast, at least compared to the clowns at Adelphia that preceded them.
-
@skyfire77 Comcast was the only game in town for me for ages. Couldn't get home internet any other way unless you got a business account. I was paying for service that was supposed to be at least 100 mbps but never once reached that speed. It was $120 a month. T-Mobile promised at least 100 Mbps and regularly is six times that fast for $60 a month.
I hate Comcast.

It's wireless. However, it's fine for anything I need, so no real loss.
-
@sovande That's probably the difference then. Besides Comcast, we've also got Version/FIOS and a few smaller, more local providers to keep them, well, not 'honest', but less shifty?
-
@skyfire77 Comcast offers good service and pricing in those areas where it faces competition, and at best mediocre service and high prices where it doesn't. Where I currently live, my choices are Comcast, Verizon DSL, and satellite (including Starlink). Mayhaps Comcast could provide 1 Gb/s service, but upload speed will be capped around 5-15 Mb/s.
They started making noises about improving service here shortly after T-Mobile announced that they would offer home internet service here. I'd have switched already (I don't have a contract with Comcast), however T-Mobile only offers an integrated modem/router/WAP CPE, which would cause problems with my Unifi network.

@manwich We've got the basic package of Eastlink Cable out here in Nova Scotia... 100 down / 10 up. Hardwired, I get about 70-80mbps, but on WiFi (2.4Ghz), it's more like 30-50 mbps. I've got a TP Link router as well, but it's just a cheap Archer C50.
