So let me just begin by saying that this is an idea I have been kicking around for a while, nothing more. This would require more time, effort, and skill that I have at the moment, so bear with me. I want to build a replica rolls-royce armored car.

Why? Well, besides my fascination with military machines, because it would be badass. Because, depending on the level of authenticity, (which, lets be honest, I would settle for visual only. They weren't the best machines, plus holy shit cost) it would be fairly simple compared to many other full custom jobs.

Think about what's required... Use an existing truck frame, likely narrowed. Drivetrain and suspension the same (totally ignoring the front leafs). Basic sheet steel and boxy design. A few classical bits such as, lights, tires, interior gubbins, dressing up the engine bay and only a few tricky custom bits like front fenders, turret, functional shutters for the windshield and grille. Thoughts? I think it may be doable for a caveman like me (or maybe someone else), maybe when I retire or something in a jillion years. Also, to my knowledge nobody has done it yet.

@mybirdistheword Outward visibility could be a small problem. Not in its original application, but if you want to drive it today...

If you picked an old (1950s -60s) RWD farm truck as your donor then you may not have to narrow the chassis down much at all...

Take the hard road and walk it. Because hedges aren't as soft as they look.

@mybirdistheword I don’t know how reasonable your idea is, but now I want to build a more usable interpretation of an American Lagrange speedster.

@kiltedpadre see I think the big problem with this kind of stuff is that in order to get them registered and stuff they have to have windshields and wipers in a lot of areas.

@mybirdistheword Add one of these and a hand powered wiper.

@mybirdistheword Here to support this idea. Maybe make the gun a tennis ball launcher with not enough juice to actually hurt someone but enough for the victim to be like "hey, stop doing that" and then you/me will not stop doing that.

@mybirdistheword If you live somewhere without inspections the obvious move is to register before conversion. But you'd of course still want to look into what the police can pull you over for. You might also be able to get away with putting a narrow windshield and wipers behind that covering armored panel, depending on what the minimum dimensions are.

@silentbutnotreallydeadly It would also have front leaf springs.

@mybirdistheword I think it's a terrible idea ... Which I totally LOVE and I hope you do it someday!

@facw thats what I was thinking for mine. Should also be easier to order a flat custom windshield.

@mybirdistheword Maybe put some of the panels on hinges; flip them open for visibility and close them when parked.
