What modern (ish) SUV will become a classic?
-
Are any of the newer, modern SUVs ever going to be a classic? The sort of car that makes you say at a car show "wow, haven't seen a _____ that clean in forever,"? The kind of car that could be parked at a car show in the first place? Im ruling out suburbans and the like, as there are old ones that are classics, and the new ones have become government vehicles/taxis, and are so ubiquitous. Land rovers and land cruisers likewise go back far enough that some are classics
The candidates
Bwm X5: i gotta admit i love the first gen X5
V10 Taureg: this one almost is, right?
Mercedes ML: the Jurassic park one?
Mercedes R AMG: its a minivan, doesn't count
Porsche Cayenne: saved the company
Nissan cross cab: come on, its a convertible!
Dodge Durango: not special
Chrysler aspen: gtfacFord anything Eddie Bauer: not quite
(Going for more modern explorer era stuff)So what am i missing? Can any of these things we generally dislike become classics?

@cash-rewards I feel like the Nissan Xterra will be desirable as a classic. I don't suppose the Honda Element counts? That should be in the mix, if it's a "suv" by definition.
And to your point on the X5, you could get that with a manual early on, and the X3 could be had in a manual even later, through 09 maybe (??) - my wife's was an '07 manual and wasn't the last.
-
@cash-rewards I was just replying this to dealkillerpoweredbyfocus, 2-door rav4!
-
@functionoverfashion the Xterra is a good one. Those could be classics. Trouble is the nice ones are getting used for what they're good at, and getting beat up a bit
-
@cash-rewards Infiniti FX35, a rwd platform with a sports car engine and living in obscurity
-
@beefchips this is great suggestion!
-
@sony1492 i always thought they were good looking things, I'll agree to that

True, so the few good ones will be more valuable I suppose...
-
@sony1492 These sound amazing, right from the factory.
-
Maybe a VW Touareg V10 TDI. These are already slowly beginning to climb in value. I used to see them for as low as $2,000, now it's not uncommon to see a sorted one for $10,000 or more. I got mine for cheap while I could.
The only thing I think holding it back is that it's still too new and perhaps just a smidge too obscure.
I'm not so sure about the BMW X5. They're cool, but they're also not that special, either.
The Nissan CrossCab is definitely a future classic. Used ones were already selling for more than original sticker before the pandemic!
-
@functionoverfashion People love to hate that engine but it can sound really good when it's not strightpiped
-
@cash-rewards As much as it kind of pains me to say it, I think maybe the 1st generation Nissan Murano
This was kind of a bold design for 2002, really pointed toward the future of crossover vehicles and still looks fresh today. Actually kind of sad what a bloated mess the Murano has turned into
-
@cash-rewards I'd like to submit for consideration the 1st gen CR-V.
Looks great, classic 90's Honda purity, available with a manual. Never owned one, but rode in a mint one, and it was a great place to be. Interior is pretty boring, but you can hardly see it since the windows are so large. Mint ones will be/are rare, as most get used to death.
-
Saab 9-7x with the V8 maybe?
Definitely not the Chrysler Aspen.
I feel like any pickup version of an SUV with become classic at some point (looking at you, H3T).
-
@sony1492 Yes, also FX45 with the V8. Not many people got one, so that'll be rare. Also it's kind of the first "SUV-coupe" with that sloped roof line, and still the best-looking among them.
-
@ranwhenparked true, but I don't know if its future classic. Its stunning that thats a 2002 model. I love my miata, and its an 2002, but its not modern looking like that is.
-
@cb An Aspen Hybrid might wind up a collectable - very few made it out to dealer lots, and most of the ones that did were bought back by Chrysler and crushed, so there aren't very many out there in private hands. Plus, one of the last cars built in the Northeastern United States, if that counts for anything.
-
@cb the saab is an interesting one, and the h3t is probably spot-on

I didn't know they crushed the Aspen hybrids

I really like those
-
@cash-rewards I could see the Suzuki X-90, the Isuzu Axiom and Vehicross, the Saab 9-7 and 9-4, the Trail Blazer SS, and maybe the Envoy XUV.

Yeah, and it even came with a B-series too
-
@dogisbadob I seem to remember that - Chrysler pulled the plug on the Newark assembly plant and shut it down just as the first batch of Aspen and Durango hybrids was shipping out to dealer lots, and they figured recalling them was cheaper than having to provide warranty support for such a limited production powertrain.

@cash-rewards I think the BOF SUVs from Toyota will all be classics (there’s a reason the old one’s were). I’m also thinking the Escalade because of the cultural phenomenon it was when it came out. The Xterra will be as well. Maybe the V10 Touareg. I don’t think any of the BMWs or the Porsches will or really any other CUV, except for the small quirky ones like the first gen RAV 4 and Honda Element. I think the first modern luxury SUV to reach classic status will be this badboy:

I hope the Nissan X-Trail doesn't blow up in value before I can bring one down here! I'd totally rock an X-Trail with a big sunroof! It's like the Forester Done Right
Does the Matrix/Vibe count as an SUV?
Older Foresters were legally considered cars and not SUV's, but the Forester XT might become classic
Maybe the HHR SS? Like a PT Cruiser but less shitty
The Kia Borrego is obscure enough, only sold for one year in the US 9but a few more in Canada), and it is BOF, but maybe not enough demand to make them classic.
