Meet Dusty - my dream vehicle
-
Tim and Kelsey have my dream truck. Join me in a drool.

@hammerheadfistpunch its gondirtin's troopy build for me, but this thing looks awesome too
-
@hammerheadfistpunch That is super sweet.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch I've been watching with great joy. I'm so happy that they were able to parley this into their life.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch that's a pricey rig. Seems really nice.
-
@italia Its spendy, but in my opinion, you get a lot for your money. When they source the car, they do a full teardown and bring up it to speed (frame repaint, factory parts or better, complete rebuilds of all major components, etc). I'd rather spend 160 grand on this than a fancy sprinter or sportsmobile.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Looks cool. Prob cost well into 6 figure range. Still has no place to poo.
They clearly spent a ton of cash and effort accessorizing and carbon fibering and whatnot, while neglecting one of the most important parts of a mobile RV, especially when travelling to strange and remote places. All it takes is one bad taco, and you're on the side of the road squatting behind a cactus with a Tijuana Mudslide about to hit your shoe.
Form is definitely leading function here.

@nermal I disagree with that, any vehicle this size be it a Land Rover 110, Troopie or Land Cruiser normally doesn't have the space for a shitter. Even if it does, the situation you're describing will quickly overwhelm what ever is there.
You have to go to a longer/bigger vehicle if you want a proper toilet.

@nermal just to be clear, the Maltec 80 is a semi-custom model and they are about $150,000. It sounds like a lot but if you try and build up any kind of off-grid 4x4 living experience you are going to be paying that and not getting anywhere near the capability. It doesn't have an internal head, I would guess that after living off-road for a few years and driving from one tip to tail of the America's, they've figured out a way that is perfectly suitable for them. Truth is, you don't really want a black water tank or cassette most of the time as you won't have a good place to empty it and it's just a potential for a big smelly mess.

The value proposition is poor, especially when starting with a 25-30 year old vehicle. Thus the reason why very few are actually sold / built. It does look cool though.
You could get similar driving capabilities starting with a new Jeep or Tacoma and adding a pop-top for half the cost. And add in at least a spot for a port-o-shit with a smidgen of privacy at that. Or go for either a built 4x4 van or pickup + camper for a bit less off-road driving and a massive improvement in living space while still coming in at a lower cost.
