Had to leave a Pontiac group on social media tonight because two guys decided to team up and pester me about how “crappy” Jolene is and how she “doesn’t belong in the group.”
Direct quote from them: “It may be a Pontiac but it’s front wheel drive junk that would run an 18 second quarter mile. People were just surprised to see it outside of a junkyard.” One guy even kept going when he couldn’t get me to fight back and couldn’t get the response he wanted out of me. He eventually just turned to posting laugh emojis over and over again.
Keep in mind these were both 30 or 40-something dudes with GTOs as their profile pictures.
I’ll never understand full grown adult men that want to belittle strangers on social media, but whatever. People seriously need to take a long look at themselves and find something better to do with their lives! At least I had good in-person feedback at the cruise-in tonight. Trying to focus on that. I assumed a Pontiac group on Facebook would be open to all Pontiacs. Wrong!
-
@mazda616 Jolene is in excellent condition and their GTOs are likely less reliable then your Sunbird.
-
@longtime-lurker Like I get that the car isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but why not just be mature enough to move on and not comment? I’ll never understand the “tough guys” that want to pick fights on the Internet!
-
@mazda616 Yeah, good call. Sucks to see first-hand where those troglodytes frequent.
-
@mazda616 there is something about Facebook that just encourages the worst behavior in everyone. There is no reason for people to shit on things like that.
If it wasn't for marketplace I'd delete my account.
-
@mazda616 some people are idiots.
-
@jminer which is weird, given the total lack of anonymity. Like, what do these people do for a living that they can just have that shit out there for everyone to read?
-
@ranwhenparked it really does undermine the old thought that people were shitty on the internet because of the anonymity.
Truth is a surprising amount of people are shitty in person too.
-
@mazda616 I seriously doubt those two have ever taken a long look at themselves - and if they ever do it will likely be a painful process.
I first became really interested in cars in the mid-80s and seeing something like a 1956 Pontiac Chieftain at a car show back then would have been perfectly normal - and would be the equivalent of seeing Jolene at a show now. Good to hear you had some pleasant in-person interactions at the cruise!
-
@mazda616
You get those on VW, Audi and BMW groups too.
I'm thankful that on the Skoda one, the majority are great, the other are all modified vRS car people who want to race and pimp their cars. -
Ah yes, the Facebook dickheads. Unfortunately your story is predictable. It's sometimes a bit of a shock to leave Oppo and find out that the vast swarms of 'car culture' are rife with people as encountered. I've met some dick swingers from FB and many of them are wallflowers. Online they are clearly compensating for their poor in person social interactions.
Part of the reason I went Moto is that people are genuinely more accepting at meets and online. Yes, even the Harley guys are usually good brothers to talk with even though I ride Sport.
Head up, we all here appreciate Jolene
-
@exage03040 my experience talking to Harley riders is that while they're more often than not willing to talk bikes, it often becomes pretty apparent that they know nothing about motorcycles that aren't Harleys and you tend to run out of things to talk about.
-
@mazda616 That's stupendously stupid. I'm glad literally everyone on here is either 1.) mature enough not to say shit like that because they understand you love the car even if they don't or 2.) love the car because it's cool as hell.
The internet is awful... everywhere but here. Hell, most of us are anonymous anyways and we still don't say crap like that.
-
@mazda616 Sounds like a bunch of jerkfaces to me! You're better off without 'em!
-
Forget them—garbage human beings have been tearing down others to make themselves feel better for all of time. Unfortunately, technology has just made it easier for them to find each other and pat themselves on the backs for their “sick burns.”
Shake it off man—if they had any sense of personal pride they’d recognize the pride you put into the Sunbird.
-
@mazda616 what a bunch of assholes. Gate keeping anything is for assholes who don’t have enough self confidence and self worth.
-
@mazda616 The only groups I've joined that I've found helpful and friendly are heavily moderated and... are focused on the Datsun 240Z and the Honda Ridgeline. The others I quite about as fast as I joined. Like the Mazda3 group. Picking on someone elses car is so petty, you know if you don't like it you don't have to say anything and can move on with your life. That's what I do whenever I see a 280Z 2+2.
-
What dipshits, I really want to join that group and troll hard with a limited edition Pontiac Pursuit....
-
@mazda616 Is there a “classic” Pontiac group? Classic groups are generally more accepting/friendlier. Also more likely to appreciate what you’ve got in jolene!
I wouldn’t touch an E46 BMW group on Facebook, but I have made real life friends through the 2002 group. Datsun and British groups are similar although I have less interaction with them.
-
@mazda616 Douche bags gonna douche. You made the right call leaving the group.
-
@mazda616 Recently rejoined for marketplace and ......damn. Facebook commenters are actually worse then YouTube.
Those "built not bought" types are cancer, they don't care about cars, they only care about themselves. Shine em on, those people are a joke

It really depends on the leadership of the group. I'm a member of a bunch of groups that are actually really great, but man there are a lot of bad ones too.
-
@Mazda616 That's unfortunate. Oppo is one of the best forums I've been part of regarding the just be a normal human being part.
That's why I try to be accepting as possible about some of the fringe sub-cultures like donks, low riders, those Pakistani decorated trucks.
Not something I understand or my taste but all of those people are like you - it's something they love and is important to them.Another 20 years, Jolene will be even cooler when you've got one of the only twenty or so left!

I find Nextdoor to be almost as bad and everyone (most) there is using real names as well. It's depressing learning how some of my neighbors think.

Unfortunately, this is basically most Facebook groups in a nutshell. I'm a moderator at a major Smart Fortwo group on Facebook.
Either you get people asking the weirdest questions or absolutely massive jerks.
The former will be like: "I have a 2012 Smart Fortwo MK2 W451 ex-Car2Go rental Crystal White gas powered version MITSUBISHI engine. Are rims from a Jeep Cherokee a direct fit?"
I'm trying to educate these folks to be self-sufficient in answering their own questions because basically none of the information they provided is relevant.
But the jerk? Hoo boy. We had one guy that is a certified mechanic of 20 years. Thus, clearly he is a car god and anyone who disagrees with him is an invalid. The most grating is when he gets stuff completely wrong (as in, stuff literally in the owner's manual) then goes "where did you go to mechanic school? You're a [redacted] if you don't listen to me."
He also stole the design of a mod from some guy in Europe then tried to call it his own invention. He sold the thing to people for $50 a piece, bragging about how nobody thought of it until now. I showed people the original mod and how to make their own for $2 or less. I was told that I should be sued for copyright infringement.
The European guy he stole from found it disgusting that he took a free mod and tried to monetize it. Seriously, this is something you can 3D print for free or make yourself with $2 of crap you can get from a dollar store.
Anyway, guy still paints himself as a victim and even still claims to be the real inventor. That was the last straw for me and I banned him. I then cleaned out the group of other jerks like him. The result is that our group is about as close to Oppo as you could get for a group that's about a single car. lol
