NASA needs you!
Mars is calling! NASA is seeking applicants for participation as a crew member during the first one-year analog mission in a habitat to simulate life on a distant world, set to begin in Fall 2022.

@just-jeepin A master’s degree in a STEM field such as engineering, mathematics, or biological, physical or computer science from an accredited institution with at least two years of professional STEM experience or a minimum of one thousand hours piloting an aircraft is required. Candidates who have completed two years of work toward a doctoral program in STEM, or completed a medical degree, or a test pilot program will also be considered. Additionally, with four years of professional experience, applicants who have completed military officer training or a Bachelor of Science in a STEM field may be considered.
well shit.....its pretty clear they arent intending to send us plebs up there...
good luck doing all your own physical labour you fucking wankers! -
@farscythe Unless you stumble in to use the bathroom and get locked inside

They did these trials years ago and stopped because the smarties were all going cuckoo.
I said it then and I'll say it again; they need at least 2 people in those group trials who have actual experience with isolation, small crew and limited/intermittent communication. Whether it be something like arctic or antarctic posting, deep sea sailing, submariner, or previous astronaut.
-
@just-jeepin Can I still use Oppo
EDIT: from the NASA page, "Compensation for participating is available." Maybe Oppo access is the compensation.
-
@farscythe I suggest you apply for giggles, emphasising your ability to repair vending machines - every mission needs a guy with plumber's crack and a mop.
At the very least you might get a form letter/email back which will allow you to proudly say you were rejected for astronaut training by NASA! ("They determined I had the wrong stuff...")
Funny enough one of my wife's high school classmates was planning on taking flying lessons with the objective of applying to the Canadian space program - I should send this to him. -

Well, it seems to be a thing.

@zipfuel sounds like plan!
everyone needs coffee and i have the beans!
i mean shit....bet i can figure out a zero g coffee machine
really
its all about the pressure and where you hold the cup -
@exage03040 I guess years is accurate, but they've definitely been doing them relatively recently. Here's a 2018 article about what they've been doing in Hawaii for example: WHEN A MARS SIMULATION GOES WRONG
-
@exage03040 I've read a few synopses of those biosphere things - it did not got well. There may also be something about people who volunteer for social experiments not being well suited to them. All the low drama highly functional humans are likely off being productive elsewhere.
I never heard of this TV show until recently but the same thing seems to have happened; isolation, lack of food and hardship led to factions, bitchiness and dysfunction. Even better because it was miserable to watch they stopped broadcasting but kept them there for the full year.

Are you talking about Red Dwarf?

Isolation of this level is bound to bring out at best eccentricities and at worst psychopathic behaviours. They are typically developed unknowingly by the individuals. Sticking everyone with no experience in a situation like this is pretty much guaranteed fireworks regardless of who they are. There are certain things that occur and things that must be learned in how to deal with both isolation on a personal level and on a social level. There's unwritten do's and don'ts.
@Snuze Put it best when he was describing subs a few months ago. It leaves with a finite moral and it only goes down over the course of the operation. Typically it's not starting very high to begin with either.
In a world where people read things on Twitter and get offended, people with isolation conditioning have their own psychological reinforcements. They learn to deal with other peoples quirks and not let it overwhelm them. Things like damaging words become impervious even if directly screamed at them, they may even laugh at that. However they can also about face and become empathetic and supportive to a person genuinely struggling. Many have felt the lowest low in their mind and found the way out of that darkness and won't go back. Typically this state arises when first dealing with isolation. Even two candidates get in the weeds they're most likely all screwed.
-
@bison78 LOL!
i build coffee machines for a living
i think he was talking about that....but i could be wrong -
@bison78 the intergalactic vending machine repairman seems to be a common trope. There's a US comedian with a bit about how the guys who restocked the vending machines on the Death Star didn't deserve to die. Disney leaned into this gag when Finn from the force awakens is implied to be a vending machine repairman. Then there's Lister and Rimmer who get the jobs considered beneath the robots on Red Dwarf - including the chicken soup vending machine.
@farscythe with his ability to build high end coffee machines and sarcastic demeanor seems like the oppo voted most likely to get reluctantly blasted into space to fulfill this plot point.
Actually this is the sort of shit I can see Elon Musk doing for lulz - someone shoot him a tweet -
@zipfuel i will accept my fate
wichever way the vote goes -
@farscythe I'm sure there are lots of people out there with master's degrees and either two years on the job in a related field or a thousand hours P1 time, two years of doctoral work, medical degrees etc. etc. who are just raring to spend a year in isolation which apparently could include some undefined compensation for their time /s.
They're not at the late 70s Cave Johnson level of desperation yet at least!

-
@nowhere man....a year in isolation sounds fucking wonderful to me
compensation would be nice
but i'd do it for the quiet -
@farscythe Hell, I would do it myself but they don't want low key slackers like me! I do have over 1,000 hours P1 but don't meet any of the other standards though - even if I was a US citizen.
