How bad of a hit can a car take and still be functionally 100%?
-
Saw this on the street walking the pup the other day. Massive hit on the bedside, but the rear axle and all running gear appears to be 100%. Amazing!
-
@stuckmtb much (if any) deformation inside the tub?
-
@stuckmtb That's pretty impressive. I'd be curious to see it driving. I bet it dog-tracks some.
-
@pip-bip I actually didn't peer inside the bed but it seems like the frame rails somehow escaped the hit, so maybe the inner box is fine as well.
-
@shop-teacher Probably, though I'd assume that's a replacement axle, so maybe they got it lined up right when they fixed it?
-
@stuckmtb The upper shock mount is deformed in that first pic. I'd be taking a reeeeal close look at all the mountings, checking the wheel and hub for runout, and getting the alignment checked before giving it a clean bill of health.
-
@facw Not if the frame is tweaked.
-
@stuckmtb For some reason, I've seen several of that gen long bed F150 that took a massive hit exactly there from a car and/or a tree branch and keep on going.
-
@stuckmtb Your question made me think of this:
-
@stuckmtb I am reminded of the Roadkill "C-body" Roadrunner
Yes, they drove it around the block... Then onto a trailer and around a dirt track.
-
@stuckmtb Apologies for the clickbaity style video, but 3:30 made me go "WTF" when I saw it years ago (can't find the original clip!)
-
@stuckmtb I wonder why they kept the smashed bed installed. It can't be that expensive to buy an undamaged one.
-
@speedy964 probably some combination of poverty and lack of any remaining fucks to give.
-
@stuckmtb Just got it's lipstick smeared, still picks up half a ton of stuff! fully functional truck. (bigger dent than I like, But trucks need a couple dents)
-
@dash-doorhandle-and-bondo name checks out
-
@stuckmtb would rather drive around with a dent than fix it.
-
@stuckmtb Reminds me of this classic. The pictures aren't great on account of old photobucket but the thread is still there with watermarked photos.
-
@ibrad WOW. Just, ... wow.
-
My prime still drove fine with no warning lights after it's brush with the road paving knuckle dragger.
-
@stuckmtb still tring to figure out what hit it so high up and missed the cab and everything behind the wheel. Jobsite incident? Hit with forklift maybe?
-
@stuckmtb Looks like it was hit bu object coming from behind at about 45 degree (judging from the paint scrapes) Might not be traffic collision, Runaway cart is my guess. and the pintle might explain the puncture in the box. the rust at the site of puncture tells me it's been driving like this for some time.
-
This reminds me of the dent that my old man got one night in his truck. Right behind the cab and completely vertical on the passenger side. Didn't notice it until the next morning. Never got it fixed. Told the cops someone must have backed into him at the bar the night prior.
The theory around the deer camp was he had one two many and played tag with a tree. No witnesses though. Remains a mystery to this day.
-
@dash-doorhandle-and-bondo I had a light brush with a semi truck when I was in HS (coincidentally also in an F150) that did similar damage. In mine the offending truck tagged the cab just behind the door, smashed the shit out of the bed, and bent the lip of the wheel as I dragged past. Tire still held air, no driveline damage, door opened normally. Drove it home.
We ended up scrapping the truck when insurance wrote it off (bare bones '95 single cab, not worth much in '06) but about 6 months later I saw it back on the road, bed still smashed in.
