Here's a thought...

I heard 'You're The One That I Want' from Grease earlier on and it got me thinking. If that film were made today, it would be set in 2002 and Danny and his mates would be hotrodding a 1991 (edited, because I'm bad at maths) fox body Mustang. It made me feel old.
-
@streetsofperth And wearing cannon-leg jeans and knit caps instead of leather jackets and pompadours.
-
@streetsofperth
If that makes you feel old....I (with my father and stepmother) once spent an afternoon with Olivia Newton John's father and his record collection... -
@streetsofperth I donโt think I have ever seen grease but it was inspired by my high school, I think the original director went there.
-
@streetsofperth If it were set in 2021, they would be hotrodding something from 2012... based on current trends, it would definitely be a 370z, rather than a mustang.
-
@streetsofperth That '70s Show first aired in 1998 and took place in the mid-late 1970s. If such a show were made today, It would take place at the turn of the millennium...
Makes me wonder what the equivalent of the '69 Vista Cruiser would be... early '90s Caprice wagon? Or perhaps a minivan, as wagons were falling out of style as family vehicles in those days?
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly Wow, that's pretty random. We were debating where Olivia Newton-John was actually from, so I looked her up on Wikipedia. Her dad sounds like he would have been an interesting guy.
@Qaaaaa It would definitely be a 370Z.
@Urambo-Tauro I want to say a Roadmaster Estate Wagon, but a Chrysler Voyager seems as likely.

@urambo-tauro The philosophy of Red's purchase of the TE31 was singular- Red wanted something that got non-shit fuel economy, over his very large and non-economical Vista Cruiser. Red bemoaned the fact that he was trading out of an American made vehicle for one made overseas. The closest analogy? If the show were made today, it would be set in the "Aughts" (that's what we call the 2000s, right?), and the old car would be a 1992ish something gigantic with shit fuel economy- let's say an Expedition or a Suburban. And Red's new daily would probably be an EG hatch or something.

The old car would be a Suburban, Caprice wagon or a wagon version of the Ford Panther body cars. The Expediton didn't come along until 1997.
And if it was the mid-2000s and someone wanted the best fuel economy, then the new car would have been a Prius.
