New foster dog

Fur face Friday, right?
After talking down a friend who was ready to give us his 5 month old hound mix puppy over slight allergies last night, this afternoon my wife and I picked up a new foster dog.
Meet Aslan. Who appears to be an American Bulldog mix, 50 lbs, about a year old and very sweet but skittish after being in a shelter since May. We are all getting comfortable with each other.
In other news, the first week of my new job has gone well, and I ought to write up a trip report for the section of the Mid Atlantic Backroad Discovery Route that I drove.

@limitedtimeonly Woof!

@limitedtimeonly
It seemed to me those bulldog mixes were all over the shelters I looked at last year. It makes me wonder if people pick them up and then realize that breed isn't right for them.Good looking pupper!
-
@limitedtimeonly Do you think there is any pitbull in that bad boy? Does he like to play tug of war with you on items?
-
@chariotoflove I wonder whether people were having a hard time finding housing; I’ve heard that some landlords won’t rent to people with breeds with a poor reputation.
-
@limitedtimeonly Looks like such a sweetie! aww...

Was there a big movie featuring bulldogs recently? Like what happened with Malamutes after Game of Thrones, Dalmations after 101 Dalmations, and on and on.

To me, there doesn't look like any pitbull in there.
-
@racinbob We have only had him for a few hours, still getting over his anxiety. But no tugging play.
Might be some Pit Bull in him, but it isn't dominant in his features.
-
@chariotoflove Supposedly he was a stray pickup.
-
@chariotoflove I'm not sure about this one, but I imagine there are many pittie mixes that get branded as American bulldog mixes because they are easier to home that way. And while it seems to be less of a problem up here, in Houston it felt like ~75% of shelter dogs were (at least) part pit bull or part chihuahua
-
@facw yep, shelters go out of their way to not label something as a pitbull or pitbull mix, even when it's pretty obviously the case. Both because of stigma, and because a lot of homeowner's insurance policies don't allow them, also because of the stigma. Which sucks, because they tend to be so sweet and affectionate
-
@facw Our rescue gets a lot of pit bulls, so I wouldn't rule it out, but it also means that I'm pretty familiar with their distinctive features. This guy is not primarily pit bull. We also label pit bulls as such.
-
@limitedtimeonly Yep, I agree. Pit bulls are sweet dogs except when the aren't. One buddy of mine adopted George who was a street stray (George adopted him....). George "guards" his shop now, George is fine except he wants to play keep away with anything that you put on the shop floor. George is fast and George with the 100+ pound clamping force does not want to give back anything he finds of yours on the shop floor; such as your cell phone.....
My cousin anthony also house sits for a pit bull. That dog is a sweet dog, except when he goes psycho. Anthony has looked after this dog for years and recently got his hand clamped for no apparent reason. He stunned it with a hard kick. He wonders if it is getting siezures. He is encouraging the owners to get rid of the dog as they have a baby due......
Its tough when the dog is stronger than you.....
-
@facw 100% spot on. I imagine a huge majority of bully breeds will be more Pit bill than anything else, but calling them American Bulldog solved many issues - especially in cities that banned pit bulls.
-
@racinbob “insert dog breed” are sweet until they are not.
Pit bulls have the reputation that they do because of the certain kind of people are attracted to them and literally every Pit Bill with issues has those issues because of the owners.
-
@musashi66 Agreed with the premise. They are a bit more of a challenge as they are stronger than most dogs though.
-
@musashi66 Ironically, the sweetest dog I've ever had, competing with the golden retriever I had as a kid, was a pit bull owned by a drug dealer until he went to prison. Almost kept that dog, but I don't want to deal with the stigma.
-
@racinbob I’ve been around german shepherds, Rottweiler mutts, Caucasian shepherds, Dobermans etc. my whole life. Pits are badasses, but they aren’t much, if at all, worse than some of those.
And the story about them having the strongest bite? 13th when properly measured. Less than my German Shepherd
-
@limitedtimeonly I know a ton of super sweet pibbles. They are only a problem when owners make them a problem.

Wouldn’t surprise me.
-
@just-jeepin It’s not just landlords - insurance companies won’t insure properties with “dangerous breeds” and you have to hunt around.
-
@musashi66 Ouch. That’s unfortunate.
