Withdrew my son from preschool today before it ever even started.

Just when we thought things were getting back to normal. I guess this is really never going to end, is it?
We are just lucky in that we have alternate childcare arrangements (my wife’s grandmother watches him and his little sister during the week) and preschool isn’t a necessity. We were mostly wanting to send him for the social aspect of being around other kids his age.
I am so tired of the world being upside down. Is it ever really going to end? I know Covid isn’t going away, but when will life look somewhat normal again? Or will it ever?
Sigh. Have a Jolene photo with her new front plate your time.

It can end if we want it to end

Anecdote: I have several acquaintances who are fleeing this state to go to a "100% open* state" to get their kids back in school. Having no children of my own, I have no opinion on the matter. Coincidentally (or not), both households are unvaccinated. Opinion on that: I shall withhold.
-
I hear ya. We've opted to not send my daughter to Pre-K. Just too many variables. Meanwhile my son gets to wear a mask all day in 1st grade.
-
@mazda616 this is the terrifying part of a deadly global pandemic, it could last years and take so many more lives before it is over. I have no idea what is going to happen the next few months but it doesn't feel good right now.
-
My nephew was in kindergarden last year, there's no playing, no touching other kids, sit far away from each other, etc.
Thats hell for a kid, this keeps up there's going to be a messed up generation and he is already weird
-
@spaceball-two Yeah. My son is 4 and my daughter is 1. But, my grandma is 89 and my grandpa is 82, and we visit them often (we’re all vaccinated except for the kids). I’d feel like a giant sack of shit if my son got sick or exposed to Covid and then passed something to his sister or even my grandparents. Even with them being vaccinated and in good health, they’re ancient and I’d rather them not be sick. Plus, there’s no way my 4-year-old will effectively wear a mask all day. He’s good with them for small amounts of time (like when grocery shopping), but not much beyond that.

Can I jump in with my opinion? Perhaps I don't need to: just review some of my posts.

@dr-zoidberg I feel bad for the kids
-
@forsweden waiting for the DHS to start flying around in helicopters to snipe anti vaxers at Trump Jr rallies.

@mazda616 Are you going to cross out the 'd' in 'build' and put a 't' in there?
But in seriousness, I feel you man....I wish the world would go back to normal too, but shit is currently messed up....
Then again, I think back to stuff in the past. It's been a little over a year of "COVID Lyfe"....which sucks and is scary....
...but then I also think back to what it must've been like to exist during WWII in Europe when they were going through 6 years of insanity...things suck, but they could still contain far more suck, so let's hope we can get it under control...
-
@mazda616 For the little kids its really a terrible delima. They need socialization and other kids to play with but they are too small to be vaccinated and they can bring the rona home and give it to gramps. Sorry but I think we are going to be in this situation for another 6 months or more.
-
@highlander the US is going to be in this situation until vaccination numbers go way up. Looking like a long haul.
-
@mazda616 what’s the story in your area? My kids pre school has luckily handled all of the rona stuff really well. They wear masks, classes are hella small and they can only enter the classroom from the outside. They shut down for a month when one of the teachers got it and no one else did.
The social aspect is important. So I get that. We’ve had our daughter in pre school since even before she was 3. My nephew is almost 5 and has not had much socialization… it shows. We never did get back to classes/activities at the Y and stuff like that but plan to once it’s safe for kids to be vaccinated
-
@tripper My son isn’t too “unsocialized.” He has a best friend that he plays with but said friend is 7, soon to be 8. So, eventually their age difference will make it more difficult for them to play together. I figure it’s only a matter of time before schools shut down and go back to virtual.
-
@mazda616 what's absolutely nutty to me is how so many hospitals in certain areas are breaking hospitalization records despite so many being vaccinated.
I was reading an article about how part of the reason for that is that people aren't putting off non-covid related medical treatments or emergencies anymore, but even then...its pretty serious, Delta gets around quick. That plus the stories of healthcare worker empathy burnout and healthcare workers walking off the job...
I'm personally thinking we will see a small dip coming up, and a really nasty surge through the holidays (again). I hope more data comes out about vaccine effectiveness after 6-12 months and whether a booster will be necessary, that's my biggest personal concern.
-
@mazda616 Gotcha. We actually never had to go virtual, they mentioned that we might have to, but the only time it was an issue they just canceled school. Crazy to try and do remote school with 3-4 year olds.

I don't think that's going to happen. There aren't many school boards with the will left to deal with the amount of shit they'd get, and the politicians don't appear to have the stomach to mandate it. Heck, the police had to be called to a board meeting for my daughter's district, and that was just about whether or not to mandate kids wearing masks. Our governor has since forced the school boards' hands and mandated masks in schools. I don't see him closing any more schools though.
Personally, I was more depressed than I ever have been when we were teaching remotely. I think we'll be fine with the vaccine, masks, and hand washing. I was in person with kids from January though May, and thanks to the masks and hand washing, I didn't get so much as a cold. Neither did my kids, who were in school with masks as well.
-
@shop-teacher I hope you’re right because the virtual schooling was a mess, to say the least. My wife’s little sister is 13 (was 12 at the time) and she basically lost a year of schooling over it.
-
@mazda616 Virtual learning's effectiveness was highly variable in depending on both the teachers and the kids. It actually went fine for my daughters who were virtual in both 2nd grade and kindergarten until March, but that anything but a universal experience. Teaching shop virtually sure sucked!
-
@shop-teacher Yeah, I don't see them shutting down schools again. Smart states will look to vaccine requirements, masking, and distancing. Dumb ones will hope that reports of variants being more dangerous for children are wrong. But I don't think anyone is going back, at least entirely. I can see a situation where if a kid tests positive, that class goes remote for two weeks or whatever.

[narrator voice] It will not.

We pulled our kid for homeschooling this year. Worked well last year, but we wanted her in for the social component. We’ll try smaller kid clubs (dance/music/art/etc) as an alternative and hope for the best in 2022…
…I’m sorry for Florida’s part in this shit show. I am Florida Man, but I am sad to say it is a paper crown with a lot of pomp, but little power.

That’s what bothers me the most. We’ll never get back to 2019-level “normalcy.” Ugh.

Just like we’ll never get back to pre 2001 “normalcy”, until it becomes the new normal a d we’re all used to it.
