Blizzaks, they just work.
-
From an unplowed highway at 4am going to work, the high speed traction was nice (90kmh in a 100kmh zone visibility was ok). Changing lanes felt like doing it on dry pavement with summer tires.
Then coming home to a hill & dragging bottom. A little run to punch thought the snow bank at the end of the drive way. It has a little spin, expecting being FWD. Then it grabbed & went.I just want winter lapping now.
-
@the-crazy-kanuck Yes. They do.
-
@the-crazy-kanuck Very nice! It really is amazing what a quality set of winters are capable of.
Meanwhile in the center of the universe we have no accumulation yet. (It's still snowing though!)
-
@the-crazy-kanuck I ran Blizzaks WS-80s on the SH Forester when I still had it. Those made it practically unstoppable in the snow. What impressed me the most was the time I made a wrong turn on a snow pack road and ended up in snow up to the door sills on grass - it wasn't like driving on dry pavement, but it made it out on its own without too much fuss.
I'm not running Blizzaks on the Crosstrek - I could barely justify dedicated snow tires where I'm living, and now I have the ability to work remote when the weather is (rarely) iffy. I wish we got more snow here.
-
I had them on my old car and they were marvelous.
I have X-Ices on my Forte and want to use Blizzaks again once I'm done with these tires. The Michelins feel more slippery, but I'd imagine the 235 width tires vs the previous 185 Blizzaks I had on my old car makes a big difference.
It's strange, but there was something really funny about the tin can Accent just cruising along happily in the snow. Not enough power to spin the tires, but enough to dig through the snow eagerly with those Blizzaks.
-
@jarrett I just cleaned the driveway, about 6"-8" off it.
It just stopped, so not very much it currently on it. -
Nice, I am running Blizzaks on my car for the winter, too (changing to winter tires/wheels seems to have delayed significant snow - we had a big dump in October, then just an inch or two here and there since):
-
@boxer_4 What year Crosstrek? I had them on my '13, and I couldn't get it stuck no matter where I drove it. Unplowed streets with 8" of snow? No problem. Blizzaks + AWD = Never stuck
-
@the-crazy-kanuck They sure do! I've got Genral Altimax Arctics right now. They're fine. Certainly better than all seasons. I'm going back to Blizzaks next time. They were definitely superior.
-
Blizzaks are black magic. That's why I made my gf get them. She actually has to go to work no matter what
-
@gin-san said in Blizzaks, they just work.:

I was told the X-Ice were literally made for ice as it name suggests, so really depends if it's slushy+black icy roads versus actual snow covered roads.
I gave X-Ice a try this time because I found them for cheap, and seem to make sense for the roads here. Have to see how they compare to my previous WinterContacts.
-
I love the crossclimate all weathers I have, but if I end up with something RWD and/or move somewhere with more serious snowfall, Blizzaks are happening!
The Juke looks happy about the snow.
-
I run Blizzaks on my M3's winter set. Because of COVID Work from Home, I won't be putting them on this winter though. GTS wheels all year!
-
It's been hovering in the mid-high 30s here. We had like 10 inches of snow in October, which has since melted. I wish minnesota would make up its mind. I want a big giant multi-day fuckoff snowstorm that dumps feet of it.
-
Indeed they do.
-
@stapleface 2019 2.0i Premium. I like it quite a bit, but if I’m honest I do miss the SH on occasion.
Blizzaks + AWD also makes you want to push the limit, at least for me. While Blizzaks + AWD = Never Stuck, I’m sure Blizzaks + AWD + LSD = Really Never Stuck!
-
@shop-teacher I had the studded Altimax Arctic ti.res on my 2wd F150. With five or six hundred pounds over the rear axle, it was unstoppable.
-
@gin-san having had X-i3s in both 185(Golf) and 235(WRX), the section width is definitely a factor. If I were to buy winters for the Subaru again I’d go 215/50r17 instead of 235/45r17.
@ToniCipriani the X-ices excell on ice, as the name suggest. Loose snow traction isn’t as beastly as Blizzaks tend to be, but the Michelins are the best on ice by a margin, especially in braking. Snow doesn’t scare me but ice can catch anyone out, that’s why I’ve run those on both of my most recent cars. Great tires.
-
@onlytwowheels I believe that. Studs are illegal in my state. With the Blizzaks I never even bothered with putting weight in the back. The Generals are good, don't get me wrong, but the Blizzaks are better.
-
@shop-teacher
I'm running Nokian now, studless. Not as much grip, may add more weight this year. -
@the-crazy-kanuck wife has ws80s on the Durango. We call it the goat. I put ws90s on my passat. Baby goat.
11 out of 10 Goldblums. -
@the-crazy-kanuck They do. When I lived in upstate New York, I put a full set of 4 of them on my Mustang, turned it into a completely different car in the winter. Even though it was against company policy, I took it instead of my fleet Caravan out to a couple of sales calls when corporate wouldn't let us shut down during a blizzard. Where the minivan would slip and slide and struggle, the Mustang plowed right through. Before I put the snow tires on, it got stuck on a very mild, icy incline that I didn't even really notice as an incline before that incident, but after, totally changed it. The company wouldn't provide snow tires for the Caravan, since my home address was technically below the lake effect belt, even though my sales territory included accounts well within that region.
-
I was moderately impressed with how well a set of LMs got an open-diff (at the time) miata around on the slick stuff, but then I went for WS on an Outback and it was a revelation. AWD + Blizzaks is just downright cheating at winter driving.
-
The van felt like a tank in its Sumitomo Ice Edge tires. Felt like I could drive through any snow.
