I've been listing to Japanese Ska all day thanks to @krustywantout and his post earlier today. I find it genuinely enjoyable and don't understand the language so it's mostly background noise that doesn't pull my attention away from the current task.
At any rate when I went to lunch my TDI radio had absolutely no idea on how to display the japanese characters in the song and album title and made me laugh.

On the plus side, at least it didn't crash the display entirely?
It wouldn't be the first time I've seen software go belly-up from not being able to read non-ASCII characters.

@baconsandwich Very true

@jminer I'm so happy you're enjoying it. I stumbled upon it after listening to Come on Eileen by Save Ferris and wanted to listen to more SKA. The Japanese enthusiasm for SKA is so uplifting. Really made my morning and your post made my evening.

I genuinely love ska and have for a long time now, save ferris is great but my favorite is Reel Big Fish. Saw them in concert last year and it was excellent! Also listen to Mustard Plug, the Aquabats and The Forces of Evil.
If you like the punk ska groups and want more of something with similar energy and like unique covers give Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies a look. They don't use much brass, but the energy is similar and they're a fun listen.
Thank you for sharing this one, I've been enjoying it all day.

@jminer RBF is great. Being from Massachusetts, we were into the MM Bosstones when SKA exploded in the 90s. There is a SKA channel I found too that is.... let's just say interesting. If you search Bad Guy SKA on YouTube, you'll find it. I'm scared of posting it. We were also into swing like the Squirrel Nut Zippers and such but they didn't have the legs like the SKA bands.

My Corolla has the same issue with not being able to display the Japanese language which I find hilarious since it was built in Japan.
-
@jminer Ha! When my Korean car can't pull the data on a tune, it reads "No value". I'm sure it's not my car making a judgement on my taste in music, right?
-
@jminer IIRC the JDM version of that head unit actually can display it. (RCD 510?)
...I actually know someone who, when he was still in the US and had a Mk6 TDI, imported the JDM head unit.

Looks like every time someone with an iphone sends me an SMS with emojis in it on my Android phone!

Japanese ska??? Must investigate. I have some Japanese surf, and it's great!
