      Link to Forbes article here.

"The juiciest details will undoubtedly surround the car’s expected powertrain. In contrast to the original coupe’s 250 hp naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, the new model is strongly rumored to employ a tweaked version of the current Civic Type R’s 2.0-liter turbo that pumps out 320 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the S2000’s drivetrain would have to be re-engineered from the Type R’s front-drive to the S2000’s rear-drive format, but one source mentioned that a figure of 350 hp was being considered. Obviously the Civic Type R’s brilliant, close ratio 6-speed manual transmission would be carried over to the new S2000."

Is future next gen s2000 owner here...?

Next gen S2000? Oh come on. It's been dead longer than it was alive. That corner of the market has shrunk AND Honda has less (fewer?) balls than ever.
There is no next gen S2000

No... I'm pretty sure that's not how transverse-mounted transmissions work. Unless the gearset can be swapped into a rear-drive housing.

I doubt that very much, unless the new S2K goes transverse engine/fwd or mid-engined, MR2 style. They’ll need a new box, but I’m sure there’s options from Aisin, ZF, getrag, etc. that they could adopt.

Probably both. Does Honda even have a rear drive manual in stock or would they have to develop one?

Dunno if it was true or not, but I've read that Honda lost money on the S2000 program, a couple hundred down the drain for each car sold (yes, I know that the technology costs carry forward and decrease the engineering and production costs of future products. But). I don't think the car market is in the right spot right now for another S2000, and it probably will never be. If Honda makes a next generation S2000, it will likely be electrified in some way as a technology development platform. That doesn't mean it won't be a true drivers' car like the original.

@dawrx I'm fairly certain they're all FWD. Maybe something on the Acura side has RWD? Either way, they could probably source a rear diff from something beefy like an AWD Pilot/Passport, and just build a new transmission. Not sure if the gearing on that diff would work, tho.

@qaaaaa there are rumors there will be a Type R variant in the future with electrified rear wheels, kinda like a reverse NSX. So its not impossible to eventually see some application of that same tech in a future S2K.

@nth256 sounds like more development in the opposite direction than Honda wants to go. I think Qaaaaa is right in that it will likely end up electrified.

@daswauto Doesn't the CTR transmission have a lot of issues with grinding shifts and other unpleasantness? I remember when they first came out people were having syncros start to fail within 10k miles. Haven't personally heard someone describe it as a brilliant transmission.

"Honda Manual = Godlike" is kind of a meme though.
