Craigslist/Marketplace Pet Peeves: ISO
-
Craigslist/Marketplace pet peeves is a very broad catagory to be sure, but one of the ones that consistantly bother me is the people who put up "ISO" or "In Search Of" posts.
Particularly frustrating during car shopping, these ads that read things like "looking for low mile, mint condition 4runner, max $10K" are mind boggling. Like, do these people really post these, sit back and thing "oh yeah, can't wait to have TONS of people reaching out trying to sell me their desirable vehicles at low prices".
Nothing in the online classified world makes me want to reach out and slap someone in the face more than these ads.
-
I don't know. It looks like I might sell one of my Volvos because I answered a 'wanted' ad last weekend. A lot less effort than putting it up myself!
What I hate are the "wanted" ads that are actually 'for sale' ads.

If you search via Boolean you can use "NOT" on CL, I think. EDIT: Sorry on CL you use "-" before a word to filter it out. For example:
Your search terms - "ISO" - "WTB"

Or dealers who post cars from thousands of miles away on my local city's listings. UGH

Found something for you.

Eh, I've done it before when searching for something specific.
Sometimes people have something they think about selling, but figure no one wants it, so they don't bother listing it or because of FB/CL's ways of listing things, makes it extremely hard to find. -

I search a few of those online “thrift” shops for a couple brands of running stuff I can’t really afford new. People post ISO posts there too, with “list prices” of hundreds of dollars. They’re really irritating.
-
@carsoffortlangley The ISO, or the "this is a picture of what my car COULD look like", with a price that equals the "could" and not "does" look like.
-
I thought this exact same thing, but my brother made one of these (funnily enough for a 4Runner) and had a lady reach out to sell hers because she didn't want to go through the hassle of listing it. She ended taking money off of her already low asking price AND installed brand new tires before handing over the keys. So my brother got a screaming good deal out of an ISO post and I have a little more respect for them now, even though this was probably just a one in a million occurence
-
@huzer Those people are clinically insane. Posts picture of fully restored concours quality car snapped a a car show, followed by several photos of the actual car for sale, rusted out, incomplete, and in an advanced state of disassembly. What do they expect us to do with this information?
-
@ibrad Also, the "for sale" ads that have one picture, only a few basic words of information and "selling for a friend, do not email, call him for details". So, I've got to play phone tag with someone just to find out if its something I'm even slightly interested in, when some more detailed photos and description could save all that time.
-
Incorrectly listed transmission. This makes me want to extinguish the sun.

This. So much this.
Dealers seem to do this all the time on CL and FB Marketplace. I always filter to search "manual" transmission and 95% of the findings are automatics, and almost ALWAYS from dealers who listed it as a manual.
-
The ISO/WTB are always asking for prices so low I think they're looking for parts vehicles. It's basically spam.

I got a great deal on my Miata because of this. It was an offerup post with one picture and the lister was a friend of the daughter of the seller. Had to talk to 3 different people but I ended up getting a pristine car well below market value because I assume no one else wanted to deal with the hassle
-
@civicwagonengineer Don't tell me shit like that, I'll end up making them lol
-
@ranwhenparked I had one recently for a WJ that said "call my mechanic"
HARD PASS
-
@civicwagonengineer I would assume so, I guess if its something you really, really want, go ahead. Maybe its an intentional strategy to keep away casual shoppers, tire kickers, and low ballers, who don't know what the seller has?

I wish my brother hadn't told me, I want to make them now too!

I could definitely see some people using it as a deterrent, but I swear 99% of the posts I see like that are for some $600 shitbox Toyota or similar
