Oppo Guidelines and User Manual/Guide

Hello Fellow Opponauts!
Welcome to Oppositelock.
What is Oppo? Oppositelock is a fun little community that was originally built out of the comment section of Jalopnik.com but in later 2020 the current owners G/O media decided all community forums were to be shut down. We scrambled and decided that instead of become one more facebook group we'd build our own place. So the hyphen was born as a place for us to never lose. The feel here is different than your usual forum or group, our interests run the gamut and in general it's a damn supportive place, both of bad decisions and on a genuine personal level.
Who's herding all these cats? The @curators are the mods here, a group of volunteers that step in and assist when needed. We're mostly a hands-off group as long as you follow the basic rules. We're funded through merch sales and donations from members and run no ads. The whole place is volunteer-run so it's lacking a few features but it'll generally get the job done and we are always improving it.

Oppodocs. This is where we will post meeting minutes, decisions and updates from the curators group.
The Master Feedback Thread. If you have any new feature suggestions or tweaks put them here.
The Hyphen - One Year In. This post is a retrospective review of oppositelock on the one year anniversary of its founding.
The OppoMap. Ever wonder where your fellow Oppos are posting from? Look no more! Take a gander and make your mark on the OppoMap to let us all know where we hail from!
As always if you have any question hit up any of the curators or you can even tag all of us by @Curators so you don't have to hit us up individually if you have a question or want to call for help on something.

This consolidates things nicely. Helps clean up the clutter at the top and allow for pinned posts to have more of a rotation.

Thank you. We figured the pins were especially screwing up the mobile experience. We hope everyone likes this, but if it needs to be changed further, we will.
-
@chariotoflove Some sort of explanation/user guide needs to stay pinned as we don't have the flexibility of the top bar that Kinja offered.
-
@whoistheleader It's linked in this thread, so people should be able to click here, then click on the link to the guide when need be!
-
@chariotoflove Yup, I mainly read on mobile, and it was interesting to refresh the page because I would have different topics suddenly jump to the top.
-
@jminer it could be interesting to put these posts in a special category for the "Help and information about Oppo" (or a less dumb name) so they wouldn't be lost on the flow of posts.

We talked about that earlier, we’re going to make a new category and shuffle them over there while keeping this pinned here.
-
@chariotoflove I found out accidentally that if you bookmark opposite-lock.com/recent instead of just opposite-lock.com as your homepage, all the stickies disappear unless someone's commented on one recently, which cleans up the mobile experience a lot. Though the downside is you then don't have the option to sort by most recent topic (a la Kinjoppo) instead of most recent activity.
-
@distraxi you can do the same thing by choosing that from the drop down menus at the top of the desktop version, but I hadn’t thought of doing that hack on the phone. The default way they are otherwise is a choice we made to keep the front page looking as much like Kinja as we could for comfort.

Request: it would be great to have a way to see posting time. I suspected, and have now verified, that "about an hour ago" is triggered at 45 minutes, give or take, which makes #hourrulelife more challenging in multiple ways.

That better?
-
@jminer I don't know? I'll post something since I'll be up for another hour at least.
-
@jminer Oh! this time I saw it.
Upon reflection, I actually prefer the old style, I just want it to be less eager to round up to an hour. Sorry to be so indecisive, but I do prefer the relative timestamps in general.
Plus that's what we're all used to from Kinja.
-
@just-jeepin I liked it at first, but on closer look it does seem to be lacking something. I’ll give it a bit of time and see what others think too.
-
@jminer I like the new timestamps. Makes it just a little easier to pinpoint where I left off in a given thread/topic during my last visit. Sometimes clicking on a thread jumps straight to my first unread post, but it doesn't seem to be not working consistently for some reason. Going by timestamp helps me avoid missing out on posts.
-
@jminer Can you display the real time stamp on the post, with the relative time stamp on the topics list? That would seem to give us the best of both worlds.

I tend to agree. Without nested conversations, it's one more visual cue to keep track of a discussion. I'm flexible though; I won't fight about it either way.
-
@Just-Jeepin no such flexibility right now, either one or the other. I can set it to switch from relative to date a x number of days, but that’s all I got.
@Urambo-Tauro @Chariotoflove I’ll make a poll at some point asking what folks want, but haven’t been at a computer much today.

There is a setting that ignores x number of replies and sends you to the top of a post, 5 I think. If there's more than that it should take you to the last read. It also marks everything as read after 3 days I think.
-
@jminer Is that a personal view preference setting that I have access to change? I can't seem to find it.

Forum wide settings, so things I set.

@jminer Just a heads up, there seems to be an issue with the site.
I attempted to upvote a post and received an error which said "Forbidden." I then attempted to create a thread mentioning such and while trying to upload a screenshot was given an error which stated "Error while parsing server response." Deciding to forgo the screenshot I attempted to post the thread without it and received an error which said "Forbidden."
I tried going to @jminer 's profile and clicking chat, but it did nothing.
Idk, just a heads up

If it was on mobile, chat really doesn’t work there very well. I had a similar problem earlier but a force refresh of the page seemed to bring everything back into function.
