Guess it was time for new wipers
-
There’s a joke about torn rubber and ending up in a station wagon here somewhere.
-
@cb they're already worn out?
You guys wanna know a secret? I never replaced my wipers on the ST.
-
@cb
My neighbour asked me to look for front wipers for his Lexus NX as he was quoted £50 (CAD$86) for the pair. Ouch.
Found Lucas ones for £15 (CAD$26)the pair and Bosch Aerotwins for £25 (CAD$)43 the pair.
I generally go for Bosch Aerotwins for cars I clean. -
@carsoffortlangley You also garaged it. Wipers last way less time when you park outside. I have to replace them every year.

Yes ice and snow will do that.
-
@carsoffortlangley
WHAT???? You had that car eight years!
They are supposed to be replaced every 12 months. I mean I usually go three years as our cars don't see many miles. -
@svend a) I never really drove in inclement weather. b) If I did, the windshield was rainex'd
lol

did you tell coworker dude?
-
@beefchips as is is as is!
Honestly, they're fine. You wouldn't even know.
-
@cb
Or an Odyssey, to hear Mr. Regular tell it. -
@cb what is this S N O W?

Here in sunny Georgia it's not the use that wears them out but UV exposure. If it was garaged and he wasn't having to always clear snow and ice off his windshield every morning they'll last a lot longer.
-
@whoistheleader
Ye', it's usually the UV light that damages them the most as the rubber dries up, and becomes brittle, etc... -
@svend Is there a way to condition the rubber without compromising their abilities?
-
@whoistheleader
I suppose there is. I mean you could us a rubber protectant, but would that likely hinder it!? -
@carsoffortlangley Counter-confession: I never did so on the Jag either in a year and a half of ownership. They were okay, but not great, when I bought it. They never got much worse through out my time with it, so I never did. If you could get past the one streak they never cleaned, they did a passable job until the end.
-
@whoistheleader Not sure about conditioning the rubber, but one thing I like to do every once in a while to help extend the useful life of the blades is to shut the vehicle off mid-wipe. The blades spend so much time flexed one way in the parked position that the rubber hardens like that. So I try to offset that effect by stopping them with the edge flexed the other way. Although I guess some newer cars won't let you do that, returning the wipers to the park position even after shut-off.

@urambo-tauro
My Skoda and as far as i'm aware, many other VAG products do.
There is three rest areas and they go around in four cycles.
Alternatively if you have a VAG product, put the wipers in the service position from time to time.
Turn off the ignition and then within a few seconds, flick down the wiper stalk. The wipers will come up to the service position. -
@svend That's brilliant actually. I assume my sister's XC70 does something similar as one of the wipers is blocked from moving up due to the hood. That confused me.
