Here's a question:
-
So if Ford can make the Maverick a hit...
...does it mean that the Hyundai Santa Fe will get pulled up too? Or is it gonna be left in the dirt?
-
@wheelerguy Hyundai really missed the mark with fuel efficiency. The best it can do is 21/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined.
The Maverick will do 40 city and most likely high 30s for highway and combined.
The Hyundai does have 5k lbs towing (vs 4k for the Ford), and the in-bed trunk.

Isn't the Santa Fe quite a bit larger? Maverick uses the same platform as the Focus... -
@wheelerguy The thing that's going to hold back the Hyundai is the 'Hyundai' part. For the sake of unibody pickups I hope they're both viable enough to drag other automakers into the space.

@wheelerguy left in the dirt, coz Hyundai.

Hyundai is going to struggle probably. Going to be hard to beat the Maverick based on specs. If my kid was younger (or non-existent yet) it'd be high on the list. -

The Ford name has far too much clout when it comes to pickups. Hyundai will fail even if it's the better vehicle.
But also dang, a slightly sub 20k small pickup? That's amazing. I'm genuinely impressed with the Maverick even if it's got only a 4.5 foot bed. It's pretty decent looking too though I'd want a Bronco Sport grille swap were I to own one.

Maverick hybrid fuel economy figures:
40 city / 33 hwy / 37 combinedThe hybrid is FWD only. AWD is available on the 250hp 2.0T.

@wheelerguy DAMNIT! I like the Santa Fe better.... and as a general rule I don't like Hyundai at all! Damnit! DAMNit DAMNIT!

@wheelerguy good question... Hyundai has been on a rampage in the North American market lately, but Ford is practically synonymous with trucks... Even if the Maverick is too small for "real" truck people it is likely to be pretty successful, even though I think the Hyundai is likely more utilitarian and useful to people who want a trucklet as opposed to an open-bed CUV... I really Stan Hyundai's recent work, and have personal issues with Ford's choices in the North American market lately (fuck you Ford for not bringing us the new Fiesta ST, or anything interesting aside from the Mustang that isn't an SUV or truck, also "ST" SUVs.. I mean, fuck that shit) but there is no doubt still a stigma attached (unfairly) to Hyundai for people looking for other than basic transport appliances... I think we'll have to wait and see.
