During these trying times™, will you change your behavior?
-
- If you are sick, will you make a greater effort to stay home? Has your employer changed anything to help accommodate that?
- If you are in a small office or conference room with someone who is coughing or otherwise visibly sick, would you say something and remove yourself from potential exposure?
At the very least, after 500k+ people have died due to an airborne virus, have we not earned the right to stay away from people who are sick? Have we not learned a tiny bit about the importance of keeping germs to ourselves?
-
@bryan-has-a-neon-with-an-sti I would settle for it becoming the cultural norm that sick people mask up if they venture out in the world, to protect others. That's the case in much of Asia where they've suffered through more respiratory pandemics than we have.
-
This seems like it could go into the politics section....
-
@someoneatacura It's borderline. Depending on where things head. Just like most topics.
-
@someoneatacura How is this politics? If someone is coughing all over me at the office, I don't care who they voted for. I think that there are political solutions available such as mandatory paid sick time, but that's not what I'm asking about.
-
@bryan-has-a-neon-with-an-sti we all drive cars that spew pollution already
-
@texturedsoyprotein I'd love if that became the norm. Especially during the weeks of dry cough that sometimes come after a cold. I'm not expecting it to catch on, though.
-
@bryan-has-a-neon-with-an-sti I'd settle for people not sneezing/coughing into their hand, then extending it for a shake. I think at the very least, we've all earned the right to not have to touch germ encrusted hands anymore.

I agree. If you've got a cold or are sick, dig into your closet for that old Rona mask or use a disposable one so you reduce the chances of spreading it on your grocery run. It's not hard.

Am I getting paid to stay home sick? If so... Maybe. If not, than no.
-
Honestly don't think I'd act any differently than I have in the past here. My personal fear of sickness has not changed in the past 18 months.
I do agree with @TexturedSoyProtein about new mask norms for sick people. That sounds like a great idea, and something that I'm likely to do at work or when going to a grocery store at the very least.

Looks like I need to start selling masks with this design!

Yes and yes. It used to be a badge of honor to come to work sick, and taking the day off was seen as weak. Now I just work the week or two from home if I'm feeling at all under the weather

Yeah, I'm comfortable asking "are you vaccinated". Also comfortable just straight up leaving/not entering the room if they look like shit.

Yeah, have to agree with this.
-
@bryan-has-a-neon-with-an-sti Considering that my office is making us return next month with no real plan in effect, I would say no, most people haven't learned a damn thing.

100% this

@bryan-has-a-neon-with-an-sti I have used virtually 0 sick time over the past year and change while working from home.
By contrast, I had one of the worst flus I had ever had at the end of 2019 that had me wiped out for 3 days. I’m pretty sure I got this flu from a coworker who’s kids were sick.
Here’s the problem though. I don’t feel like this responsibility is fully on the shoulder of the worker. Work culture needs to change. On day 2 of my aforementioned flu, I attempted to come into the office because I was stressed about missing work, and the potential fallout of dealing with an upset boss. I was worried about how it would look taking additional time off. Thankfully I think the state I was in was obvious because my boss sent me home and told me not to come back until I was sure I was better.
While some of my fears were thankfully (and to be honest, surprisingly) in my own head, for many others it’s a reality that using sick time is looked down upon, and others have no choice but to come in sick, be it because of demanding managers or the fact that they aren’t given sick time, or even because they can’t afford to not work. Others have convinced themselves that coming in sick is the best way to show how dedicated they are in competitive industries, and it becomes a sort of competition to see who can make themselves suffer the most in honor of their particular employer.
I do personally consider it a moral obligation to not spread sickness, and I will certainly be more aware of signs of sickness in those around me. But there is only so much I can do in the face of those who desperately want to ignore the last year, pretend it didn’t happen, or childishly ignore or defy the lessons we should all learn. I mean look at India. Look what’s happening in Taiwan now, people really can’t let their guards down when it comes to something this serious.
If we face another pandemic in our lifetimes, and I really really hope we don’t, then I hope it’s mild, because I don’t think we’d survive a more deadly one, for the reasons above (and other reasons I won’t go into because I don’t think this topic belongs in politics). I really don’t think people appreciate how lucky we have gotten with the vaccines and in general.
-
@dawrx Yes, I agree our work culture has to change. I think it should become more unacceptable to show up sick than to miss work. Obviously some legal and financial support for people who are sick would help too.
-
@tripper I never would have called someone out (except for friends, I guess) for being at work sick before this, but I might end up doing it now. I'm not very confrontational, but I've kind of hit my limit for how much stupidity I can take in regards to... everything
-
@texturedsoyprotein Maybe, but the photo would have to be way more disgusting.
-
@texturedsoyprotein lol, not gonna happen
-
@bryan-has-a-neon-with-an-sti I was going for cute, but I'm sure the options for gross-er pictures are endless.

If people didn't have terrible seasonal allergies that didn't present so similarly to a cold/flu/rona, this would be a lot easier.
1 - I'll definitely feel more able to stay home without stigma if I've got a low grade fever or am feeling like I have a virus.
2 - Most at my office would have no problem telling someone who's visibly sick to go home (but allergies to complicate this).
Have you become more of a germaphobe? I would love to see all public/office restrooms fitted with those foot "handle" things, fwiw.
-
Naw, it's a significant percentage of that 500k who have died of the virus. Not near that many. Remember the carboard cutout hit by a fly ball in NYC? He died of covid - they said so at the hospital.
I'm in S GA. Neither my state nor FL have bothered much with masks and distancing. I bought a pack of 10 disposables over a year ago and there are still 6 in the packet. 2 were used by scaredy riders. We haven't needed masks in WalMart since last year. Only inconvenience I have is that Sonny's salad bar is still not in use. Out by the freeway (I95) most of the chains don't allow inhouse eating but that's the exception. Outback, Panda E, chinese buffets, Fogo de Chao are open for eatin.
Maybe we're just immune down here or it's something in the water but all this caution is overrated. Damn, people, get out there and be 'Murricans. Play!
-
Yes. Absolutely. Any excuse to work from home!
Even though the mask mandate has been lifted in our state (despite vaccination rates ~32%), our office policy is to wear a mask if you haven't been vaccinated. I think it's great that the few holdouts, all anti-maskers, are being required to wear a mask while they are in the office.

@texturedsoyprotein
I'd prefer it if people who know they are sick would just stay home instead of going out among everyone else. I realize sometimes that's not feasible, but I would like it to be the default if you can. To me, masking up is what you would do if you have to go out.
