Decided to up my router game.

So I bought a TP-Link AC5400X Tri-Band Wireless Gigabit Router, what I didn't realize is that it's basically 12in x 12in... Yeah I'm gonna need a bigger house.
-
@Bloody-the-resident-shitposting-saffer I opened this post not sure whether it would be a wood or wireless and excited about either. I stopped buying bigass all-in-one routers a few years ago and use multiple devices now. A dedicated router/firewall and 2 access points. Cost me less than the last bigass router I bought and works very well, more stable too.

Good choice! I had the TP-link Archer series before I went full ubiquiti UniFi and it was excellent. It got taken out by the Directv genie getting struck by lightning on the coax side, putting power on the Ethernet and blowing up my router. -

May I ask what system you went with?

@snakesm13 I’m using ubiquiti gear, it performs really well for the price. I don’t need the blisteringly fast AC everywhere as we only have a 50mb internet anyway.
I use an edgerouterx behind the cable box and from there into a Cisco switch (not needed, I’m just a sys admin). And on the WiFi side have an AC Pro as the main unit and an edge router in the kitchen connected wirelessly to extend the coverage into the garage and driveway. Probably only have $250 in it.

I've always done Cisco/Linksys equip running DD-WRT, but the one I was using decided to crap and out and, since I am still living at home, I saw a TP-LINK Archer C50 on scratch-and-dent special on Amazon for like $20 with free Prime shipping. It's not amazing, but it's been a great plain ole home router and seems to manage my zillion port forwards for the software I run with no issues so can't complain!

Yes, upgrade the house for the router... Correct Path.
-
@jminer You see, I was looking at Gib Mesh setups and they were around the same price as this and were only Duel band. This has 2 5GHz and 1 2.4GHz bands . It's way cheaper than AmpliFi which seems to be the new hotness, and Google Mesh seems okay but who knows when they'll eventually discontinue that (I'll never forgive them for killing Google Music).
-
@rallydarkstrike I used to do that, but last time I tried support for DD-WRT on routers was pretty mediocre. The edgerouterx gives me a nice combination of durability, configuration and performance so it’s staying. Keeping the routing offloaded from the wireless gear has meant I have to reboot things a lot less often, which is nice.
-
@snakesm13 Jesus, I guess that is one way to do it.

1000% with you on google music. My wife and I are begrudgingly using Spotify at the moment. I have all my offline media on our Plex server too but that doesn’t work when you want to listen to X song. Ubiquiti was also cheaper than Google mesh when I bought it, while giving you a lot more control. The 5ghz band on it is able to handle 4K rips from Plex to the rocky and such with no problems.

Yeah, DD-WRT could be finicky, but if you got some mainline Cisco/Linksys stuff, their support for it was pretty good...I think the one that crapped out on was a plain-jane Cisco/Linksys EL1200....on DD-WRT it was ROCK solid. The only time it ever restarted was when the power went out. It's great firmware if it's compatible! Sometimes flashing it was a PITA though...
Re: Google Music...yeah, I hate that they killed it. I'm one of those old school people that would still rather use MP3s than streaming, so I always purchased music from there...now I am still trying to find a replacement. 7Digital seems like a decent option for now!
-
@snakesm13 Also was toying around with UniFi but with router and access point I'm in for similar money and now have to figure out the best place to wire up the second node.

I really do miss the quality that was Linksys networking gear. Cisco did us all a disservice by buying them then largely abandoning the space a couple years later.

I remember when my entire home network was linksys, what a shame.

That honestly looks like a stage for some robotically enhanced death combat arena from a dystopian future.

@chariotoflove It's clearly big enough...

I'm still hunting for an alternative and one of the reasons I was looking for a new beefy router is I'm going to try Plex or something similar like Subsonic for my music library. I also had a coupon for the MS store so all in I'm sitting at $220 which isn't bad at all as far as I can tell.

@bloody-the-resident-shitposting-saffer just a little low-effort photoshop

@beefchips still a quality shit post. And I should know.

@forsweden Indeed.
