Did jalopnik stop showing page counts?
-
Shop-Teacher had mentioned engagement was down on Jalopnik, so I went over to check it out. Noticed two things, the decrease and quantity and the absence of a view counter on the page. That probably doesn't bode well.
-
Seems like that was a change to Kinja before the purge, but I’m not sure.
-
@davesaddiction I don't think they've shown that for a good while.
-
@e90m3 Sisn't it go away with the stars? or was it after?
-
@davesaddiction I don't think so. One of my last Kinja Oppo posts that I archived the the weekend before last still has the count. Maybe it was user blogs only.
-
@e90m3 stopped visiting jalop last week, haven't missed it. as far as i'm concerned, there's zero left from what made it so cool 10 years ago.
-
@davesaddiction guess it was before the exodus, but it was both right before and intermittent.
-
@classicdatsundebate way after
-
@benjrblant agreed
-
At this point, it could just be Kinja being Kinja, and we'd never know.
-
Almost like they alienated some of their most active users. Wonder what happened

Nah, can't be it

I believe it's dependent on the browser. IIRC I usually had to go use Firefox to see my pageviews. Not sure though, haven't particularly cared for a while.

I'm having a hard time remembering why it was so great back then, but I know for sure that the commenters were the best part.
And I also know for sure that the commenters on the front page have gotten a lot more angry, a lot less interested in discussion, and a lot less welcoming.
So many times in the past year, I started a reply or a comment on the FP and ended up deleting it before posting.
-
@benjrblant I stopped a couple years ago. The site has shifted to a new audience since I joined back in c. 2008/9. Back then we had COTD, Murilee doing DOTS, Roy dragoning everything in sight, and every sort of weird and unloved car front and center. It's since evolved into another mainstream corporate wasteland. The jalopies and beatniks are all but gone.
Jalopnik has moved on, and so have I.
-
I imagine Deadspin clicks took a dive but are trending back up with a different audience who doesn't care about lack of comments and have no knowledge of labor/management issues?
Jalopnik will do the same thing. They will build a new and different type of audience.
Or they'll end up firing all the writers, closing the shop, and the G/O board will give Spanfeller millions to 'retire'.
-
@cobrajoe that's a big part of what turned me off. The staff writers have become very negative, hand wringing, doom and gloom-types and the commentors have become very mean and angry with chips on their shoulders. This is not what Nick Denton intended with the Kinja platform with greyed/starred/unstarred posts and it is certainly not what Melania meant when she told us to Be Best.

The automotive press world revolves around page counts, clicks, views.....
In its prime from what I remember even the worst of the worst Jalopnik articles would pull in 20-30k views, while the best were in the 100-500k range from my memory. So not sure why they would hide the view counts unless they dropped significantly after all these business changes.
If you get invited to press events because you make average 50k an article in the first 24 hours, then you magically make 5k max lifetime of an article, you might start losing access to press cars, events, etc.
You would be surprised the biggest names that everyone knows that probably average the lowest numbers, but every so often they get a viral article that you remember them for.
This is why so many influencers are getting invited to events now. A lifestyle blogger with 1 million subscribers with 100k views even on their worst video is better than [who knows how many people read your article because you hid the view counts].com

The little flame/page stat marker went away on the main pages shortly after all of Deadspin quit. Herbspin is a flop, and we can't have anyone seeing that, can we?
That made it really frustrating to look up how my older articles did, but eh, I've got others to point to since then.
