Oh Land Rover...

I'll spare you needing to watch the whole video.
They bought a defender
Check engine light came on
Fixed the check engine light
Cameras went out
Fixed cameras
Check engine light came back on
Engine needs to be replaced
Instead of new car with 2nd engine they opt for a less cool trim in a different color but with the winch
Winch is installed but DOA
New winch installed
Wiring harness damaged during install
2nd defender inop.
3rd same color, less cool trim defender chosenYikes.

@HammerheadFistpunch if this isn't the stereotypical lousy land rover experience I don't know what is.
-
How do they expect to make any money on this vehicle if it takes 3 or 4 tries to get one that may be functional.
-
It's sad that "the most dependable Land Rovers" ever built came under Ford's watch...
And Ford's consistently dwelled in the lower quartile of vehicle reliability league tables for decades. That was as good as LR was ever going to get...
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Yeesh.
-
I gotta watch this later. I'll sound like an apologist but I chalk the 2nd one up to a lousy dealership.
-
@adamftw Possibly true, however it sounds like they are getting the YouTube star treatment with Engineers actually flying out to work the problems, so who knows.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Engineers coming out to diagnose a new model is more common than you think, but I don't disagree. My buddy was a service advisor for a high volume BMW dealer for a while and having some guys over from the motherland was pretty common when new models came in for service with weird issues. They actually had a separate two bay garage that they could hook the cars up to diagnostic equipment and they could run the machines from Germany.
-
@adamftw That's what it sounds like is happening here.

@hammerheadfistpunch Do you think if they didn't put all of the unneeded technology in this or just waited for future updates, could they have focused on reliability and gained some goodwill/reputation? I'm thinking problems like this are going to turn people off. I think many probably want to buy the new Defender because it looks cool and off road capable. I know everyone complains about Toyota and how slow they are to adopt the newest gadget in cars, but their shit always works (yes I know they have recalls but you know what I mean).
-
@krustywantout I think Toyota's excessively long dev cycles are a blessing to their reputation, not to mention their OCD about quality. I don't know if that would necessarily translate at JLR...but it couldn't hurt.
-
@ramblinrover I remain hopeful...though concerned.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Sounds like this thing isn't even mall rated. Looks like I'll be sticking with my twenty year-old Toyota, which doesn't even have ABS. Helps that I also don't have any money.

"brand" is the answer!
-
Death, taxes, and unreliable Land Rovers.....
-
They spent an awful lot of money for that custom order Defender, too... Though it's actually a lot LESS money than how the average Defender is equipped was the interesting thing, but a custom order, stripped down Defender comes in right around the same spot as a well loaded Wrangler Rubicon in the high 50k range.
And all that money doesn't buy a reliable car. Really insane the experience they're having. I think I would have let LR replace the engine on their original custom order Defender and see how it goes.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch what I dont understand is why rich people still buy these. Repairs being expensive, fine. But the thing breaking constantly any being stuck at the dealership? Seems that would be unacceptable at any tax bracket.
-
The only thing that would be funnier is that Doug's new Defender has zero issues other than normal maintenance during his first year of ownership.
-
@dieseldub that's what I'd do. But I understand their point that this is a business asset not a personal vehicle.

So maybe some insight. There are a bunch of LRs at work. There is one LR4 and probably 7-8 Range rovers (a mix of RR and RRS). LR4 guy bought his used, keeps it nice (extended warranty) services at an inde. I actually think this is his wife's car as he rolls a jetta most days. The range rover folks...get a new one ever year or two, most with less than 15k on the clock. We're not back at full capacity but the die hard RR guy is here, his is a 2020 and his SIXTH in the 7 years I have worked here.
I'd like to say that it's just the consultants and their $$$ here, but my wife's boss...same deal...I actually asked him what he thought when I was kicking around a used one as my "dad" car. He said, "We always buy them very slightly used and trade them when they get close to the end of the warranty, or when they start having a lot of problems. Usually with the air suspension"
-
@hammerheadfistpunch I suppose, but I figured they had special ordered it very specifically for a reason and would want to keep to that package, otherwise it defeats the purpose of waiting 4 months for their custom optioned Defender to be delivered in the first place.
It was an interesting package they had and now they're just getting some left over Defender that may have a few extras they don't want or may be missing some that they do.
-
@tripper That's insane. I can't fathom having enough money to buy a new vehicle every year or so. It sounds like they have a really strange market cornered. I like the way they look, but that reliability sounds terrifying. Or a potentially cheap vehicle to buy after someone else has figured out how to fix all the issues.
-
@chariotoflove I'd buy Jeep over landrover any day and I'd never buy a Jeep.
-
@dieseldub IF it were me I would have the new engine put in...but their goal is to do a series and dump it so resale may be important to them. The package they had was awesome, someone is going to get a good deal on a cool defender with a new engine.
