Good, fun, action movies for a 10-12 year old?
-
UPDATE: Holy crap, you folks are great. I have options for years now! Thanks!
This weekend (starting now actually) my son is at my place. He is suffering through terrible seasonal allergies so our outdoor activities are a bit limited to try to reduce the asthma that is triggered by the allergies...
Soooooo... with that out of the way, does anyone have any suggestions for fun/ridiculous action type movies that might be suitable for a kid who is 10-12? We have watched all of the Fast and Furious films and could fall back on that, but I'd rather expand the base, if possible.

@sovande i still like the nic cage gone in 60 seconds. I think it holds up for what it is, and there's a good variety of cars.
-
@sovande The Italian Job? Mission Impossible and it's various sequels? (I've only seen 1 and 2 and maaaaybe 3).
If you want to completely change gears, Sky High, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Nacho Libre, Galaxy Quest?
-
@sovande If you're ok with a smattering of f-bombs, I'd recommend Beverly Hills Cop 1&2. I absolutely loved those at his age (my parents didn't give a fuck about foul language).
Skip the third one though. It's really bad.
-
@sovande How would he be with the Die Hard series? Also, perhaps the Terminator flicks, except maybe the last one with the heart transplant may be too intense.
Also, at that age, all the old badly dubbed Kung Fu flicks from the '70s are a great source of campy action fun. Ooo, and while you're at it, maybe Big Trouble in Little China then.

Forceful 2nd on Die Hard.

My oldest is obsessed with Godzilla.
There’s an animated Godzilla trilogy on Netflix that is pretty rad. The first film is excellent. The second and third film touch on some adult themes (cults, suicide, where do babies come from). Maybe give those a once over and decide if they are kid friendly.
There’s all sorts of Godzilla films on all the streaming platforms.
The latest Kong v Godzilla is action packed
And fun to look at. Available on HBOmax.We also rented Shin Godzilla on Amazon. It was a nice blend of the classic concept with a modern update.
If space lizards that blast lasers out their face is your thing, there’s no shortage of content out there

The new animated Spiderman Spiderverse is a good movie that won't lead to explaining to your 10-year-old why sex in the front seat of a car is a bad idea
-
@sovande How about The Goonies? A little campy by today's standards, but fun, and one of the kids has asthma, so he might relate...
ETA: The Indiana Jones trilogy, too.
-
@sovande Back to the Future 1 and 3! The second seems a bit dark, but 3 takes it back with the same feeling as the first and ZZ top makes an appearance!
I'll second Big Trouble in Little China, very over the top, just fantastic.
Most 90s action films really... They didn't really age well, and are SOOO over the top.
-
@sovande Fun and ridiculous? There is the obvious Raiders of the Lost Arc, but I might go a bit more campy with The Mummy. The one with Brendan Frasier not the Tom Cruise bomb. It's a fun movie with just enough gross out moments to make a 10-12 year old laugh hysterically.
-
@sovande Baby driver?
I dunno, is that appropriate for kids? Maybe don't ask me lol
-
@sovande you could do any of the Jackie Chan action movies. I just sat my kids down for Willo recently. And the Dark Crystal. We’ll be getting never ending story when we can find that. Maybe any of the Ernest movies as well. Sandlot, Little Rascals,
is available on YouTube. (DaftPunk music movie) -
-
I tend to like laughingly bad action movies. The more ridiculous the better. I'm thinking Schwarzenegger in True Lies and Last Action Hero.
-
@sovande RoboCop!
-
@mocamino the original starship troopers, Oceans 11
-
@sovande If you can get subtitled copies (or I could be wrong and both of you speak Cantonese fluently), I'd recommend Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Very fun and very ridiculous.
-
@krieger22 THIS
-
@sovande Both Ant Man movies.
-
@sony1492 Both of those, definitely. I thought Oceans was generally just a good movie, but ST ranks really high on the "so bad it's good" scale. That one would depend on the 10-12 year old though. It's pretty gory. Granted, bad sci-fi gore, but quite gory. I seem to remember a sex scene that might be inappropriate for the age, too.
-
@forsweden Is it because shifters are very pokey? I bet it's because shifters are very pokey.
-
@mocamino For sure, there's a couple intimate scenes in ST, when I was that age I was binge watching sex in the city but that provides absolutely no clarity

Good call.

Oh yes! Absolutely.
