Bicycle price go up

I sit here and read a discussion about the value of a running driving Lexus suv for $2,000. I think that $2,000 car is still a better value than this bicycle. This is a luxury recreation item. This is pure opulence. Sales tax at 8% is $1,160.
-
@highlander wow, that extra 4 in there took my a minute to notice. That's nuts.
-
@highlander And I'm 80% sure someone would still call that entry level.
-
@highlander To be fair, that's more of a motorcycle!

I paid $4400 out the door for a brand new Honda that’ll go farther and faster than that thing.
-
@akioohtori the S-Works is like AMG Black for specialized bicycles.
-
@jminer I didn't say it was an inexpensive motorcycle! It does kind of put that into perspective though when you could buy an Africa Twin for about the same.
-
I was hoping this was a thread about a typo on a price tag. Guess not.
Funny though, I had a friend who at one point told me his bike was worth more than his car. He was driving an old beater in college, but was racing a Colnago with pantographed Campy Record. He later got a Merckx.
-
@highlander I have bought cars for less than the sales tax on that bike.
-
@essextee same. I have bought bicycles for less than the value of the tires on this bike.
-
@highlander lol FUCK
-
@highlander Would you rather have that bike or two of these trashed manual Saturn Vues to beat on?

Errrr, wait, there's an extra 4 in that price. WUT? That costs nearly 3x as much as my car adn I DON'T drive a trashed Saturn.

Sounds like he was right.
I sold one of my old road bikes and bought my Fiero.
Today the Fiero is worth up to probably 2X what I paid.
That old Columbus tubed, Campagnolo SR equipped bike would easily be worth more.
-
@whoistheleader my last bicycle was $3,800. It’s top of the line minus $4,000 carbon wheels. That’s still half as much...
-
@highlander I just don’t understand how this costs almost as much a brand new Honda Fit. Just blows my mind.
That’s why my bike was $1050, and even that stung my cheap ass.
-
@highlander all my homies hate tarriffs
Why are you shopping in a jurisdiction with sales tax?
-
@highlander That's a lot of money for a bike.
-
@highlander
While not a MTB guy, prices don't surprise me. In 2011 my tri bike cost more than the truck I was driving. That's really not that uncommon with cyclists - more money in bikes than cars as I've been there myself. It's not hard to have thousands in roadie/tri wheels either, especially if you have stuff like disc rear wheels... The high end tri bikes are all in the $8-12k range now, aero roadies in the $6-8k+ range...been shopping lol. The good part of all of it is the lower end frames usually have the same aero profile with a different carbon layup, so the aren't a bad deal. The money is the lighter weight, gruppo (Di2!), wheels, and sometimes handlebars. -

And yet that's solidly middle of the road, somehow! Mine were 900 and 1450 and both are "entry level," have some buddies on stuff that's $6k and up, though nothing as crazy as 14k. I feel like 1-4k is the sweet spot though for buying new.

I'd like to give someone as much money as I can for a new mountain bike sometime. I've been looking for a while and I'm starting to acclimate to numbers starting with 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. But paying five figures is still a psychological hurdle for me.

@vincentmalamute https://us.forbiddenbike.com/products/dreadnought-slx-complete-deep-space-9 not enough figures but super rad...

But which would be faster? On second thought. Don’t answer that.

Cool looking. I'm not that up on high-pivot bikes but my understanding is they're designed with extreme downhill.
-
@vincentmalamute generally a carbon frame with sram GX or shimano XT is going to be 4K or more... my stump jumper pro had an msrp of $6500. I didn’t pay that but was getting ready for $5k when I found that bike.
-
@highlander I remember you commented when I made a few posts about looking for a new bike. I loved the lightness of the Epic Evo Pro but I'm thinking I'd like a bit more trailness like the Yeti SB115.
The dealers tell me they sell almost only Stumpjumpers around me. And Yeti SB130s which I assume are Stumpjumper equivalent. The Specialized dealer said he never stocks any Epics / Epic EVOs because no one asks for them.
I'm thinking I'd like to avoid the extra weight of a Stumpy and I don't "think" I need the trail capability. But I haven't demo'd a Stumpy. You knew that's definitely what you wanted? Was the Epic EVO a consideration? Maybe I should demo a Stumpy?
wow - The Epic EVO Pro model is now $8800. I assume the Stumpy Pro is now similar.
