That bare spot of bark? That's from whacking my head off of it. Was on some trails near the house with a buddy's quad. Climbed a steep hill (my second time- I actually made it all the way up a little earlier) and it stalled at the top. It's always a hoot when you have time to think "oh shit oh shit oh shit"

If I hadn't have worn a helmet... well, I don't want to think about it.

@sony1492 Fine actually. Got extremely lucky and didn't hurt it at all. Other than my head all that happened is a bruise on my left calf and a slightly skinned right elbow.

@jrc99 don't worry, if you weren't wearing the helmet there wouldn't have been much thinking going on anymore!

@wrong-wheel-drive Which is exactly why I'm happy I wore it.

@kleebrz It's not busted surprisingly. Not a single scratch. Which, come to think of it, means either that mark on the tree was already there or it didn't take much to make it because I didn't hit it ultra hard.

@jrc99 if it’s like bicycle helmets, don’t use it again. They’re not structurally sound enough to take two hits.

@just-jeepin Honestly I won't either way. I borrowed it from my friend because it was too big for him (he didn't realize it when he bought it) and he's actually moving away soon.

Heck of a divot, man. That would have been an ER trip for sure.

Replace that helmet. It's done its job.

@jrc99 If you didn't wear a helmet, that poor tree wouldn't have a scar. What did that tree ever do to you?!?

@musashi66 I don't know, I bet a fractured skull could mess up the tree pretty good too.

@JRC99 Wow, glad you are ok, and were wearing the helmet. I've bounced my (helmeted) head off pavement cycling so I know the feeling. As others have said even if it looks ok, you don't want to trust the helmet again after taking a hit like that. Thank it and send it off.

@jrc99 don’t go by the outside appearance of the helmet, it’ll be the foam on the inside that has compressed to absorb the impact. Unless you can say for certain that it isn’t compressed, thank the helmet for its service, toss it and get another.

@st80mnd It looked fine, but I don't know if the foam survived. It's ultimately up to my friend to decide what to do with it, as I borrowed it from him. I did recommend replacing it though.

Yeah, I've had enough head injuries that I wear a helmet any time I'm on my bicycle. Next bad concussion will probably do me.
