I am stuck in the 90s
-
But that's OK. I'm happy to be stuck. I Love this bike.
Got the kids bikes all tuned up this weekend and ready to hit the trails; Got mine fixed up with new tires and new brakes. I have to say modern tubeless sure is a lot easier to seal than the old ones. New brakes work well, but a real ride will confirm.
The fancy Specialized that I got my oldest sure looked shiny but needed quite a lot of work. Apparently it's a bit of a diva. Got it figured out though and he loves it. My youngest's Trek tuned up nicely and he's happy too.
Only mountain bike left is my spouses... and her bottom bracket was in Poland last time I checked. Soon enough!
-
@ibrad I was just looking longingly at my 90s s works race bike. Good times. Sub 20lbs.
Trying to figure out my next steps on a bike. My 2001 is getting to the point where it's getting hard to support and it needs a new rear shock
-
@hammerheadfistpunch That one is sub 20lbs too but I don't have any way to measure it at the moment. Definitely getting hard to find parts. I had to get the tires from England, and the brakes were NOS from a local bike shop.
Had 2 friends with the late 90s s-works (yellow/red). Nice bikes!
-
@ibrad tires especially. What did you get? I need some skinny 26 replacements
-
@ibrad That thing is rad. Looks like an old Marazochi fork? Also get a +1 for the OG Time ATAC pedals. I loved those things.
-
@highlander it's funny, that's what's on both my bikes. Love em
-
@hammerheadfistpunch Schwalbe racing ralphs rear and rocket rons front. Would have been my first choice either way so I lucked out. A bit wider than I might have gone for @ 2.25 but they fit so it's good. They were getting scarce already when I ordered them. Couldn't find any from Canadian distrubutors.
-
@ibrad I'm limited to 2.1 in the rear. I have pythons which I love but they are rotten.
Looks exactly like the tire I like though (your new ones) -
@highlander Yep. Z2 Atom race with freshly changed oil! And those pedals are the best pedals. My youngest is going to learn on Times this year.
-
@ibrad The other thing is those mavic cross max wheels, what the hell happened to Mavic? They used to be the high end wheel market.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch I love them too. The problem is the newer cycling shoes didn't fit well on the pedal with that bulge at the base of the pedal, so I went to shimano SPD's and have been back on SPDs since 2009 or so.
-
@hammerheadfistpunch 2.1 is what I had on there before. Old generation Racing ralphs from ~2009 or so. They weren't really meant to be tubeless... but like many of the time they were if you tried! I
I actually finished the season last year with an old 1.95 Wild gripper on the rear because I tore out the sidewall on the racing ralph; Apparently these are actually worth something as a collectible now!
-
@highlander Does mavic not make good stuff anymore? I haven't followed along but I have mavics on all of my bikes. Will likely try to score some NOS XC717 or something similar to replace the crossmax. The ceramic coating is getting thin so it's inevitable that they'll need replacement if I keep riding them.
-
@highlander I have new shoes. I haven't put cleats on them yet but now you're making me worried. The soles look the same as my old shoes though, so hopefully they are compatible. I used to ride SPD way back when, but found they hurt my knees.

Collectible tires??! Crazy.

Mavic went bankrupt, sold off all of their extraneous businesses and got bought by someone maybe (?) and are back concentrating on rims. Something like that.

I could not for the life of me get my EggBeaters working on my Shimano shoes. Gave up and went with SPDs. That Shimano shoes would not want to work on anything but SPDs didn't occur to me.

Yeah, I saw the front that matched the rear I pictured listed on the local classified. They guy wanted $150! I figured I could use the front to match mine and figured 15 bucks was worth it because it was obviously a typo.... until I checked ebay and realized he was serious!
I think those tires were probably <60 bucks brand new!Did not realize mavic had gone through so much. Shame. I did see that their old technical manual with all the ERD specs etc is still live and accessible though.

I still don't understand. Tires age and wear out. They're not especially pleasing to look at hanging on your wall as art. Did they have historical significance? Like John F. Kennedy used these tires for a quick ride before he got in his limo in Dallas?
-
@vincentmalamute They're Green
Apparently they were NOS and still good. honestly mine were sitting in a box, used, for probably 20 years before I went looking for a tire last year and it worked fine. It's not as pliable as a new tire, but it wasn't cracked and still hooks up on dirt just fine. Maybe not so much for road tires.
-
@ibrad The last set of wheels I bought aftermarket were stans rims on DT hubs. I have DT prebuilts on my road bike and my gravel bike. My stump jumper has Specialized Roval carbon wheels. Not using a rim brake really opens up wheel design. I think a 517/717 on a shimano hub is the way to go for a rim brake old school wheel. Pretty easy to build and keep true.
-
@ibrad That's ok, I'm stuck a couple of decades earlier..

I was out of bicycling for 20 years. I restarted in 2017 and was asking "Why is everything Shimano? Where are all the Suntour components?". The answer was a shock to my system. At least Mavic is back.

Nice OG Nuovo Record! I thought for sure the top tube was going to say "Paramount". I can make out "Super Le Tour XX". The Schrader valvestems should've tipped me off.
-
@ibrad
That's nice! Really nice...@HammerheadFistpunch
As for tyres...this is Australia's go to for 26" tyres

@drVanTraveler Yup. Can't beat a steel frame for the road work. Late 80's.
-
I'll join in the 90's steel lovefest. I have a few others around, but these are the most presentable.
-
@drvantraveler That's a looker! Very nice.
