Nightly Alltrack (& A Comment on Vaccines)
-
The Alltrack is nearing 25,000 miles already. It’s covered in pollen now, but it’s still a great car.
Okay, now to the non-car suggestion:
I don’t care about your vaccine posts.
A big reason I joined when I did is because I thought, with a new political administration and some election stuff taken care of, that the digital “oh, COVID, I’m staying home, why is this person at Walmart not wearing a mask” talk would die down substantially. As someone who lives a more, in the terms of some, “normal” life than most of America (the Alltrack’s mileage should explain that), I really don’t like seeing that stuff online. (Despite some social lacks, my life is awesome, not normal, thank you very much).
I must say, though, that I really appreciate the existence of the Oppopolitics section. Takes on events like January 6, all the Cuomo stuff, etc. is away from the DOTS and Pip Bip’s 4AM Hour Rule posts. Thank you, site staff, for having a separate section and moving some posts there if necessary.
Now a suggestion, please, is doing the same for the vaccine-related posts. I don’t want to sound like a baby, but if we have a side site devoted to potentially controversial social, cultural, and political issues that aren’t related to cars, the vaccine posts could go there, too.
Before I receive a “you could avoid those posts,” it’s easy to avoid a post called “I Got My Second COVID Shot!” versus “I Did a Thing” with no thumbnail. “I Did a Thing,” got a car, got a computer, nope, corona shot. I’ll admit I’m skeptical about the vaccine, but the constant vaccine posts have honestly been a big reason I’m not as present.
I think moving the vaccine posts to Oppopolitics or putting a clear disclaimer that “hey, this is a vaccine post” would be beneficial for this website’s user experience. Some could share their experience, while those who really don’t care (no offense) or would rather have a car website free of corona and talk of other social issues can enjoy it here.
Thank you.

@trumpybear I actually like Oppo because of it's non-car stuff. Seeing what other people are doing in and with their lives.
-
@trumpybear I'm sorry you think a vaccine is controversial ¯\(ツ)/¯
-
@trumpybear it's not a political thing to get a vaccine, social non-car content is part of oppo.
Sure there may be many similar posts but its not a burden and it'll pass with time. Anyhow the conversations started from talks about current world events are interesting and relevant for the FP

@trumpybear
I like to think about Oppo like somebody's garage. A bunch of folks come over while somebody turns a wrench, and they crack some beers and talk about cars, and sports, and personal stuff, and whatever else is on their mind. There's a common thread, but it's not the only thread. And right now, vaccines are really important to some of us, particularly the older farts like me. I like hearing that my friends are getting some measure of protection against this obnoxious apocalypse. Ain't nothing political about that.
-
@vincentmalamute I think thats what makes this place special to me honestly. It's much more of a community than other car havens.
-
@trumpybear I don’t thing vaccines are political or controversial, but the constant I got a vaccine posts with a picture of a vaccine card are just... pointless I guess. But then, it’s oppo, much of the stuff here is just random, not car related stuff.
That said, no plans on getting one anytime soon. I’ll get it if it becomes a requirement to fly or to visit abroad.
-
I honestly can’t fathom how our country has gotten to a point where a vaccine is deemed political so that someone asks that posts about them be put alongside content about elections.
It’s a medical procedure vetted by the fda, to decrease deaths related to a hopefully once in a lifetime pandemic. Let’s get them, and celebrate each person getting back to normal safely.
Deep down I’m thinking this is a late in the game April Fool’s joke but that seems too hopeful.
-
@trumpybear I appreciate them them because they reminded me to get my ass in line for one. I’m finally officially eligible in my state. Front line food service workers weren’t originally eligible in Wisconsin, now I’m just waiting on an appointment.
-
@trumpybear move all the gun posts right with them. Also if you want a strict interpretation of the rules your name should only be allowed on oppo politics posts.
-
My 18yo son buses tables at a restaurant. He is eligible, and we’ve got him on a couple of lists. I may even drive a few hours to get him a jab.
-
A pinned vaccine mega-thread might work
-
Then we might as well have a pinned mega thread for “everything not about cars.”
-
@ttyymmnn the entire front page of Oppo should be pinned megathreads
-
@ttyymmnn personally I don’t want to travel for it. Seems counter productive.
-
Counterproductive how?
-
This post is deleted! -
@trumpybear a Blockbuster! Wow, thats a blast from the past.
I totally get being irked by a steady stream of off topic content you dislike. @Curators Personally I'm not against vaccine posts, but a megathread or moving them off the main board is totally fine by me.

@trumpybear
Oppo would be of no interest to me at all if it was just about cars. Most cars (and many car nerds) are boring and the resultant conversation would be deeply tedious as a result. -
@trumpybear The non-car stuff is what makes Oppo what it is: a place to hangout with our friends who are into all kinds of different stuff, but all happen to also like cars. I have discovered countless things I didn't know I was interested in simply because someone took the time to post about something I would've likely never run across on my own. For me, Oppo is about all the things big and small going on in our lives while we also happen to all be plotting our next car purchase. That we take the time to share that with each other and commit to being excellent about it is Oppo.
If the posts were a hypothetical string of Governor/Senator/el Jefe/group of whatever people X should do Y because Z, that would be the clear realm of Oppolitics. There isn't anything political about "I got a shot/want to get a shot/will soon get a vaccine," much less in the context of global pandemic that has killed millions of people.

Oppo is, and has always been, from its inception, an off-topic forum.

I am interested in what sort of scientific expertise you bring to your skepticism.
-
@silentbutnotreallydeadly
Me too. I like cars but there's always other bits being talked about on OPPO, some that I didn't think would interest me but I found interesting, etc... -
@trumpybear
Although the vaccine posts aren’t negative or contentious, I do understand how one can get tired of hearing Covid everything all the time. A part of me says “do what we gotta do and move on; covid is not the only thing to talk about.” But it will pass. People are just rejoicing at the light at the end of the tunnel.
One thing that I think might partly address your request is if everyone voluntarily tagged their vaccine posts with “vaccine”. From now on, if I feel compelled to post such a topic (highly unlikely). That is what I’ll do.
Also, thanks for the kind words about the site. It’s really nice to hear.

@trumpybear vaccines aren't controversial and people getting them is a good thing. If you don't like, don't read?
