Took my truck off roading today
We had planned to take a family day trip to go hiking at Starved Rock state park, but a couple different people suggested we go to nearby Matthiessen state park instead. They said it's even prettier, and far less busy.
Well, it was beautiful, but it was also VERY packed with people. Hoofing up the many many stairs wearing masks because you can't get 6' from other people put a bit of a damper on it.
After a picnic lunch, we decided to head to another state park we saw a sign for on the way on, but had never heard of. Buffalo Rock state park is on top of a bluff across the Illinois river from Starved Rock. It wasn't as pretty as Matthiessen, but it had WAY less people.
All told we hiked about 5 miles, with a lot of elevation change. I also drove 180 miles round trip. It was a long day, but a good day.

@shop-teacher That looks fantastic. Reminds me of Turkey Run here in Indiana.

@shop-teacher Looks like an excellent way to spend a day!
Off-road with 2WD? How’d you not fall off a cliff and die?
@just-jeepin That does look very similar.
@jminer We had a really nice time
@pyramidhat It was touch and go there for a while...

I did the exact same trip about a year ago. My only complaint about Matthiessen was that there is less to hike than Starved Rock. Also visited Buffalo Rock on a whim on the way back home, did you guys see the buffalo?

@shop-teacher That's some of my old stomping grounds; a bunch of my Cub Scout outings when I was a kid were in Starved Rock and Matthiessen. More often we went to Silver Springs because it was closer (I grew up in Oswego), but the big outings were Starved Rock. Haven't been there in probably 35 years...
@p5guy-now-gtiguy Yes we did!
