Detroit Style: Automotive Design from 1950-2020 exhibit at the DIA
-
Last weekend MrsStuck surprised me with tickets to go see a new exhibit showing at the DIA in Detroit. If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking it out! It's got quite a few neat concept and production cars along with some period automotive art (mostly concept sketches but some other stuff too). Just make sure to reserve yourself a ticket as DIA admission requires a timed reservation these days. For those of you not in the Detroit region or otherwise unable to make it, please enjoy these photos!
A 1950s Chrysler 300 I think:
GM Firebird III:
LeSabre Concept:
Corvette Sting Racer:
Oldsmobile Tornado:
Some Syd Mead amazingness:
A Rodger Hughet sketch:
Wayne Cady
Joe Perez:
They even had some interior sketches which I found amazing in both their artwork and the amazing level of detail:
Lastly, I'll round it out with a Cuda, Mustang, and some Skaybait:

Was this done with any of the people behind the American Dreaming documentary? I know they've been doing small shows and trying to put something together for a few years.

@phenotyp I'd be amazed if there wasn't some involvement there. I saw that show when it passed through the Scarab Club in Detroit a few years back. That show had a lot more original artwork than the DIA show, but didn't have as much sheetmetal. Personally I love the artwork so I honestly preferred that but the DIA definitely has a much broader audience so I understand the choices they made.

@stuckmtb That's awesome. I wish I could have been there to see it.

@stuckmtb GIB Cuda!!!

@stuckmtb What did they do raid the GM design archives haha? I'll certainly have to visit sometime before the exhibit closes in June 2021, Firebird II is the only one in the series I haven't seen in person yet and this seems like a good chance!

@stuckmtb Good to know it good! Iām waiting a few weekends but definitely going.

@Bandit seems like it! There's a lot of stuff from all three in there, but it does seem that GM provided the most content.
