Pima Air and Space Museum Snow Day Picture Dump (Feb 2019)
-
Since @Chariotoflove mentioned I should do this, I figure... maybe I actually should. About a year and a half ago Tucson got quite a bit of snow (for Tucson) and since I was off work that day. I did the silly thing which was to go for a drive with my FiST into the worst of the weather and then head to the Pima Air and Space Museum.
All pictures were taken with an iPhone, so I wouldn't expect the world from them (I do own a bit of Canon gear, but the best camera is the one you have with you sometimes).
Grumman OV-1C with some slight visibility problems, but still angry as ever.
Beechcraft Starship 2000 looking just a bit cold.
SUD AVIATION SE-210 CARAVELLE VI-R
My daughter knocking the snow off of the tail of a Sepecat Jaguar.
A B-36 Peacemaker, because if you come to PAaSM and don't take a picture of the B-36 are you really an airplane junkie?
(insert random B-52 joke here)
MiG-29 Fulcrum
North American RA-5C
Douglas F-6A SkyrayPretty sure you all can figure this one out.
I thought I had more pictures, but these were the only ones I could find in my storage.

Weather or no, how many museums can your kid go up to and touch the exhibits like that?

That's a solid point. PAaSM is pretty good about their "go ahead and touch everything that doesn't say do not touch" policies. I can't tell you how many times I've run my hands along the bottom of the SR-71 that is inside the hanger.
Sidenote, I'm pretty sure that this snow day trip was the ONLY time I have gone to PAaSM and not taken a picture of the SR-71.
-
@gamecat235
I'm gonna make sure I take time to do that if I'm ever in Tucson. -
@chariotoflove It is well worth the visit. If you do make it out this way and want company, give me a couple of days heads up and I'll do my best to go with (assuming that all of this shit is under control and people can see other people again). I will take any excuse to go out there as often as I can. LOL
-
@gamecat235 Deal!
-
Wow! And to think that on that day I still dragged my bike out of my apartment and rode to class instead of playing hooky
Hoping that'll happen again sometime; with this heat it seems like it's never gonna get cold! I've long mused about getting a membership to Pima as long as I'm in the area, but I've never made good on it and unfortunately now's not the time.
-
@amoore100 I let my membership lapse a couple of years ago. But I am seriously thinking about getting another soon. Since most of it is outdoors. NOT now mind you... but maybe once we get away from flattening the curve as a straight vertical line.
The heat this year has been nuts. I would kill for a snow day.
-
Yeah, hopefully it doesn't get as bad here as in other places since it's a bit more temperate so people will be outdoors more, but yeah, I spent the last few months at my parent's place in the Bay and my housemate said the monsoons just never came and it stayed hot. Now it's 90 in November and although I don't mind it too much, it'd be nice to get some variety! Also, had no idea you were Tucson-based! I actually saw a TourX at El Con the other day—there can't be too many of those running around!
-
@gamecat235 Great shots! I'm having total dissonance between that snow, and what I have experienced in all my trips to Tucson. I just can't believe it's the same place.
-
@amoore100 Yep. It rained for like... 4 days. spread out over a couple of weeks. It sucked. 2020 is the gift that keeps on giving.
I've seen 2 other TourX's in town. So there's more than ours here. But not many.
-
@classicdatsundebate this was out at Saguaro National Monument East
-
Folks do seem to have more raised wagons than average around here, though. My XC70 blends in surprisingly well, and Outbacks are everywhere with a couple Golf Alltracks here and there as well.
-
My wife is already wondering what her next move will be since the TourX was discontinued. Now that she's fully onboard with a wagon (her last car was a Mazda 3 hatch), I think we'll have to go with either Swedish or German wagons (no complaints from me other than my wallet).
-
@gamecat235 I'd love to see the desert covered in snow...although we go down there for the weather, of course. I've maybe only seen rain once or twice. One time we followed a thunderstorm all the way from PHX down 10 to Dove Mountain area. it was stunning. The next few days, the desert was in full bloom. I still remember the smells. You live a beautiful part of the world.
-
@classicdatsundebate It is a factor in why I came back to live here. It really is a great place to live from certain perspectives. (I miss the everything about Chicago though... except the humidity, I hated that).
-
@gamecat235 Now you got me jonesin' for some Giordano's....god damn I miss traveling.
-
@classicdatsundebate Indeed. for the last 6 years I averaged about 8 work trips and 2 personal trips per year. All around the country and occasionally overseas... Hell I was in France in February. But since March? The furthest I have travelled is Phoenix (rented a house with a pool for a week long getaway) or Tombstone (for beer).
-
It sucks doesn't it. WFH makes it even worse for me.
-
It really does. I’ve been WFH since March and my daughter has been in remote school the whole time as well. It’s sucked.
-
@gamecat235 I really enjoy the Outback though I've never driven one, maybe they're worth a look? I especially like the idea of the now-discontinued 3.6R, just because it's a big flat-six and those are somewhat rare even though the engine itself is somewhat thirsty and underpowered.
-
@gamecat235 I enjoyed trying to ID the planes under the snow. The MiG was tough.
-
@amoore100 it’s possible she’d enjoy one. But the damn Buick has her a bit spoiled. it’s damned comfortable and it’s WAY faster than it has any right to be. The first time I passed someone on the highway down to Tombstone i shot up from 67 to way too fast in practically no time... I don’t recall the Outback’s having that kind of throttle response. But it’s been a few years.
-
@ttyymmnn I almost tagged you. And I debated not labeling the planes... but. Not everyone is you. LOL.
-
should we call someone and let them know the damn kids have been messing around again and put the B-36 engines on backwards?
Thanks for the post, this is definitely your second best contribution to the internet to date!
