Upgraded iPhone for Mrs. Vandura for Christmas
-
I posted about this earlier and got a variety of answers. I'd like to try again.
Mrs. Vandura currently uses an iPhone 7 that does this thing where the pictures from wherever they are never come into clear focus. This is likely a software issue that I'd love to correct.
But she is newly a grandmother and views lots of content of her grandson and I though it might be nice to surprise her with another phone which she may not much appreciate, but too bad.
I don't want to spend a large on this. I don't want to buy a new phone unless it's new old stock of an earler-than-current version. Plus-size is out. Current battery life on the 7 is pretty swell.
So can we try this again? Can I buy something sub-$400?

The iphone SE is very good, I've had mine for a year and I really like it. The camera is awesome. Starts at 399 if she doesn't need too much storage on the device.
-
@rusty-vandura I know you say you don't want new, but the iphone SE is $400 (before tax) and is supposed to be solid. It's basically an iPhone 8 with a new processor. I'm probably going to buy one soonish.
-
I buy 3-4 iPhone SE (the small 5 based one) a year on Backmarket. iPhone 8s are like $230 there at the moment. My mom likes hers.
-
@jminer There you go. I'd already been thinking about an 8. It's referred to simply as iPhone SE?
-
@beefchips Where do I buy one?
-
-
@rusty-vandura As others have recommended at that price point the SE is your best choice. It will be the same size, camera, screen, and operating procedure (home button) but with a much faster processor and more storage capacity standard. Not to mention the much improved battery life.
-
@rusty-vandura No, this one. $399 brand new for 64GB, which is really not very much storage. Apple gonna be Apple.
-
Does she have an iPad? You might look into an iPad because she can better see pictures and it does have a decent camera for under $400.
-
@rusty-vandura
I'll say what I said before. I recommend a new SE. Smallish, in your price range, up to date and supported so it will last her a long time. It's a great grandma phone. -
@krustywantout Gotta fit in her pocket. I think the SE is the answer.
-
@chariotoflove I did not realize what the SE was when you posted that before. Now I do and it's absolutely perfectly what I want.
-
@rusty-vandura said in Upgraded iPhone for Mrs. Vandura for Christmas:
Is this the idea?
No, that's the old SE (confusing name) Buy the new SE. The case, fingerprint sensor, screen, camera is all the same as the iPhone 8, but has the processor from the iPhone 11 so much better.
-
@jminer
Yes, the new SE. It's bigger than the old SE, but still grandma friendly. Still budget friendly. -
I'll throw yet another vote for the SE. My wife got one a few months ago and loves it. I recommend just buying it brand new from direct from Apple. The phone is priced very competitively for what it offers to used/refurbished ones don't have enough discount to be worth it in my opinion. Are you a Costco member by chance? You can get a few bucks off there: https://www.costco.com/cellular-phones.html?brand=apple&refine=ads_fbrand_ntk_cs%3A%22Apple%22|
-
As others said, the SE is supposed to be an 8 with a new chip. I'm still using my company-issued 8 and it's been fine.
I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend GameStop for a refurbished phone. We bought an iPhone for my mom with a replacement plan. A few months later she spilled a drink on it. They replaced it, no questions asked.

I just got my iPhone 12 mini a few days ago and I've been loving it so far. The camera is amazing and it's smaller than the 7. I upgraded from a XR (6.1" display down to 5.4") so the smaller display size was a bit of an adjustment but it's a lot larger than the 7/8/SE2. The pocket-ability is what sold me on it.
-
@fttohg I just ordered one, 128-gig. A wee bit more money than I wanted to spend, but way more phone than I expected to get. Win!
-
@bicyclebuck Hi Buck! I think this is the first I've seen of you now that we're hyphenated.
I ordered a 128-gig SE direct from Apple and now, I'll have to sit on it for a month until Christmas.
-
@qaaaaa
Why do you need three or four phones a year? -
@rusty-vandura I guess I need to work on my presence! You'll be happy to know that after a power-induced shutdown of my folding machines, I finally got one back online. The other has some kind of software glitch and needs to be rebuilt. At least I'm getting a little bit of folding done.
Good luck with the phone!

@bicyclebuck I need to get back to lobbying people about Folding. For my part, I took my brontosaurus Precision T7400 over to the high school and plugged it in there, where they have lots of solar panels and it's not my utility bill and:
I've moved up two positions in the past few weeks, but unless I can get another big GPU online, I'm maxed out. So it's a 1080ti and the school, and I have 1650 Supers in both machines here at the house so whichever one I'm using at a given time is folding. The 1650 is the most efficient, most PPD/$ of any of the cards. It's designed to be a respectable gamer that doesn't require your own coal-fired power plant for a PSU.
Also, bicycling: I got a pair of Fulcrum rims that will accept my Gravel King tires and I can run them tubeless. I've been back on the 700x32 in the interim and having some very good rides. I'm looking forward to seeing how those tires ride with no tubes.
AND... Mrs. Vandura has a Specialized ladies' MTB with pincher brakes and no suspension. It had 32c on it and I ordered a set of the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme or Ultra or whatever (with tubes) in 40c and we'll run at 25 psi initially and I'll slap on my cruiser wheels -- which I have now -- and we'll do a boardwalk ride together on Thanksgiving Morning.
-
@rusty-vandura Wow! That's some folding! We are in the process of building a mid-power gaming setup for my son. I don't have any credit cards, so I have to buy it part-by-part as the paychecks come in. He has a GeForce RTX 2060 on the list, but I'll check to see if it's the best value for the budget before I buy it next week.
It sounds like you're teasing out the best ride for your bike. I look forward to the reviews!
As for your wife's bike, "pincher" brakes? Do you mean caliper brakes, v-brakes, or cantilever brakes?
I'm running cantis on my Conquest, calipers on my World Sport, and v-brakes on my Super-V. Of the three, the v-brakes have the most stopping power for the lever pressure. Highly recommended if your grip strength is low. Just know that the lever travel is greater and they can limit the tire size.
A ride on Thanksgiving sounds great. If I go, it will be by myself. I didn't do a good job of passing on the bike bug to my kids and my wife never rides.

@cé-hé-sin I break em a lot. Ran one over, dropped a crankshaft on another, stuff like that
