I grabbed the Jag over lunch and have some thoughts

Oh man this car.
I'd link to the back catalog but... RIP. Anyway. I bought a cheap 2004 Jaguar S-Type R in late 2019 as a "congrats on getting a job" project car. And what a project it has been! Despite being in good shape when I bought it, the vehicle has been in steady decline despite semi-constant wrenching on it.
The latest "fun" came when I picked it up from storage today. As I pulled into traffic I detected a little hesitation and a slight miss.
More than likely it is the coils/plugs being fouled by an increasingly leaky valve cover gasket, and indeed the problem went away after a small Italian tune up. (Between bad roads and traffic it is very hard to find a place to actually open this thing up...) I have the gasket, but don't feel like messing with it right now. Still, it highlights what I hate about this car: it is in decline. All of my other projects (save perhaps the Saab) are getting better as I wrench on them, this one is getting worse.
I need to do the valve cover, rear shocks, EGR, and CD changer, all of which I have parts in hand for, and then give it a good Svending and sell it.
Damn is it fun to drive. I think of the Volvo as a quick car, but the acceleration can feel... almost frantic when you really get after it. Like it is being accelerated quickly but against its will. The Jag, on the other hand, never feels rushed or even that fast, until you look at the speedometer and realize your slight change in throttle position left everyone in the rear view and you are now well exceeding the speed limit. It is... intoxicating, despite the occasionally willful ZF 6-speed automatic.
I like the Jag. It has presence and power and is just a lovely car to drive.
It is not, however, a lovely car to own. And therein lies the problem.

@akioohtori I like the way those look and love the green. Though it's in the I'll never own category as they're getting older and dealing with all those problems seems daunting, more of because, like you said, new ones crop up. Unless someone gave me one, then I might be willing to deal with the headaches.

I remember your recounting of the road trip home with it. Such a lovely day that was (because I was reading about it while warm and dry at my computer).
I don't remember the details of your storage locker. Is it climate controlled? If it isn't, could the temp and humidity fluctuations while sitting unused be exacerbating problems?

@akioohtori Ya I get it. My jag is not fast, but you put your foot down, smoothly woosh away and before you know it you’re going pretty quickly. SO SMOOTH.

Pretty sure you wouldn't owe it anything and you'd be even less likely to sink money into it. Akio is doing it right for this car but doing it right is not a fun way to own this car.
