Who's Excited About Low Mile Used Cars?
-
So COVID is bad. No arguments there, it seems like it is going to touch all our lives in some way. BUT......I expect that, with the economic pressures that are going to only worsen over the next year, increasing caseloads and limited driving, we will see an increase in low mile used vehicles or used vehicles with their odometers similar to what they would have been a year ago.
Driving across the board is way down. I know that personally, I am currently driving about a mile or so each day. That's it.
What kind of mileage is Oppo seeing on their own cars these days? Typical, less, none...MORE?
-
About the same. I never stopped going to the office. A bit less on weekends in general since there's fewer places to go, but still getting out.
-
@carsoffortlangley I'm seeing the same mileage as I've only missed 1.5 days of work due to COVID. It wasn't me who got it either, it was the first case at the plant.
My E90M3 currently sits at 49.5k miles and my E92 328i sits at 97.5k.
-
My SS had 1300 miles on it when I bought it, but the guy wasn't driving it for years before the pandemic...
I'm driving about the same every week (WFH one day per week), but Mrs. addiction's mileage has gone way down, and she's been WFH the whole time. Kids are still in school though (for now, anyway).

@e90m3 On a car like your M3, what do you think the breakover points are in how these cars are valued? Clearly, 100k is a big one. And maybe 20k or 30k is one for people who what something ridiculously low mile for its age. Is 60k another one? I don't know.
I'd much rather a car get driven at least like 5000 miles a year. Cars don't like to sit...
-
@davesaddiction I think the breakover points vary as an LCI comp with 50k is probably worth more than an 08 with 30k on it. I'd say 60 or 75k is another breakover point. Prices seemed to have bottomed out for examples you'd want. Plus, I can't seem to find any LCI manual sedans for sale.
Mine is in a detached garage at my apartment, sure having it in an attached garage will help me drive it more. Plus the future income bump will take some of the worry about expensive breakdowns away.
-
Nah, give me the cars that are approaching 200k. That way you know it's a survivor. (Plus you can get them a lot cheaper)
-
No mileage reduction for me. The real estate market is insane right now, with no end in sight. I'm booked out till the first of next month already.
-
@carsoffortlangley
Way, way, WAY less mileage. I bought my Sportwagon in April. I have 2400 miles on it now.
If this was a normal year, I'd probably have about 9k or so on it now -
work work work money money money
-
200k with good service records? Absolutely.
-
So far this year I am driving 1/3 of my typical annual mileage. Staying home from work for nearly 6 months and not doing any trips will do that.
-
@carsoffortlangley My DD is the same. My Boss got 1000 more than last year. Nothing else to do during lockdown and hey open roads. My wife's Fost on the other hand (teacher full remote) is way down. In fact I drive it once in awhile to just make sure the battery doesn't die.
-
@carsoffortlangley I put about 30,000mi on my Canyon the first two years I had it. Since March I've put only about 4,000 on it, and that's including a 1200mi round trip summer road trip. Working from home and not driving 50 miles per day in just commute is really cutting down my gas bill. My warranty runs out at 36k so I'm kind of glad the mileage is staying low!
-
Wonder if anyone collected data of a motorcycle sale spike a few months after Sturgis
-
I must be getting old, but I'm driving my SS waaay more than I was driving my M3. MagneRide = magic ride
My M3 was due for a suspension refresh, and the roads around us are pretty rough in spots. Thankfully (for my brother), the roads in Austin are really good, for the most part. He's loving it.
-
@davesaddiction Has he done the rod bearings yet?
-
I never stopped working, but went from a job that had a 5-mile round trip commute to one with 50. If I have to run errands, make it 60.
-
@e90m3 No, I've mentioned it to him a few times, but he's a busy guy.
Honestly, though, if it made it 130k without blowing up, I'm thinking it's a survivor. I told him to be good about letting it warm up before pushing it, and there's no way he'll drive it as hard as I did. Ha!
I'll keep after him to get it done, though.
-
@interstate366 Yeah, my normal round trip to work is 60 miles, before any side trips. Only takes 35 mins, though, so not bad.
-
@davesaddiction said in Who's Excited About Low Mile Used Cars?:

Nah, service records are unnecessary.
By then you can easily tell if the owner took care of it or not.
Plus, you can get it cheaper without service records, and that leaves more money for repairs.
-
@carsoffortlangley I think car manufacturers are closely following the WFH trend. It will affect their leasing business and revenue from over-milage and high-mileage lease adders.
I got a survey from Acura back in June which asked a bunch of questions around changes to driving habits. -
@cobrajoe I suppose you're right (with a thorough inspection).
-
I haven't even been working from home, and only have been home six weeks this past year for pandemic-related reasons (...without me getting it)... and Fuelly says I've done 3909 miles in the past year.
Of course, some of that has been that I did more cycling, but the bulk of it is the events that I'd roadtrip to have been cancelled, and that was most of my driving, apparently - I'd usually put more like 10-12,000 miles a year on.
-
We were supposed to replace the Cruze this winter, but have no reason to as of now. Be great for us when we replace it next winter though.
As far as driving, almost none? My wife's car has gotten 300mi since last Sept (she's WFH fulltime since last Aug). I take it out for 30min jaunts around the neighborhood occasionally. I usually drive 18k/yr. I've driven 750mi since I started WFH in March. My last fill up was 8/25. I've run 1,092.4mi since WFH started.
Rumor is WFH for us until a vaccine, so it'll be awhile before I'm driving again. The ZR2 will go at 100k or when paid off regardless - hopefully with a redesigned 2.7T ZR2. No more high mileage commuters for me.
