Losing a friend of 7 years
-
The disease set in yesterday and today I got the diagnosis:
The left click button on my trusty G700 mouse is dying - it will not hold a click well enough to drag a window or dimensions/views on a drawing. Unfortunately in my line of work this makes it an almost entirely unusable piece and replacing the part requires an expertise in electronics handling that I do not possess.
Today this mouse has been with me through 4 moves, 3 jobs, and 2 women. I have had it longer than any of my vehicles, my wife, my house, or my dog. It has outlived 3 pairs of sunglasses. It has been half way around the world. And today marks the beginning of the end.
Fare thee well old friend

Don't give up!
It's not that difficult to replace the microswitches.

RIP. Funny how we fall in love with inanimate objects, especially ones that help us work.

I had to get rid of two Logitech gaming mice (corded) because the cord would start to short. It was a very common problem but the fix was beyond my capabilities.
I mostly hated it because of the replacement cost, but getting used to a mew mouse was never fun. Hopefully you can find a good replacement.

@krustywantout
Opponauts are waaay more prone than others to fall for what most others would just consider "things". LOL
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold I sorry for your loss
-
@bicyclebuck I saw that article but it's no good, he did not desolder the 2 PCBs and one of his pictures actually shows he broke the upper PCB - that mouse is toast.
I don't have the tools to pull off that job and buying them would get me a new mouse I think
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold
Not sure if you have a lot more upheaval in your life than most or if you have a more solidly built mouse than mostMaybe taking it apart as far as you can and spray contract cleaner in there and hope some gets into the micro switch? Cheap, easy, minimal skill.
-
Both?
The job and housing stuff, yeah I've moved a bit but I'm mostly settled in now. My life now is basically completely different than it was 5 years ago save for living in the same area
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold I grabbed the first one I saw. I guess it wasn't the tutorial I followed. Either way, all you really need is a small screwdriver, a couple of guitar picks (or similarly thin, tough pieces of plastic), and a soldering iron.
You could always start with disassembly and if you manage to get the old switches out without breaking anything, then buy the kit.
You can do it!
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold What's the worst thing that could happen if you try to DIY repair? You break it? Nothing to lose.
Only thing left to complete your theme of changing all the things in your life is to move to Italy
-
I'm looking at replacing the whole upper PCB, the new ones come with a connector so I would not have to re-solder the upper board
-
@vincentmalamute I'm looking into it now because you're right, worst case is I have to replace it anyway
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold Worst case is 3rd degree burns or burn the house down with the soldering iron. Worse worst case is do both
-
@Zaphod-s-Heart-of-Gold Are you a "49er," then?
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold I 'member the day my awesome Logitech G15 mouse finally gave up the ghost like 2 years ago. It hurt my feelings pretty bad.
-
I feel your pain. My trusty Kensington Expert Mouse has been acting up, and for the first time in 20+ years I don't seem to be able to get it working correctly. I think I have one more spare in the basement, but after that it's all over.
I did start using a Logitech G602 that I bought last year and forgot about. It seems to be a decent device and is easily programmed, and I think I may be using this one for quite some time.
-
@6mt_ftw I have the same 602. I with there were a little more space between the thumb base and the buttons. I have fat thumbs and fingers, so it's not unusual for me to accidentally click G5. Maybe I should just disable that button in the software.
-
Microsoft makes good mice
-
@6mt_ftw the 602 is close to my 700. Looking at the newest ones (604) there seems to be a pretty high rate of issues with it from software to hardware problems. Also I wish it was rechargeable, my 700 has a cable and I keep a rechargeable battery in it so I can plug it up when it's dead, which is admittedly by the end of the day - battery life is atrocious but the cable makes that a non-issue.
I'm going to try to fix mine and if that fails I'll likely give the 604 a shot
-
@dogisbadob I use the programmable buttons and want to keep the feature which is why I'm looking at gaming mice.
-
@zaphod-s-heart-of-gold The other one to look at would be the MX Master.
It seems to be a bit better built than the gaming mice, and the ability to recharge with a simple micro USB cable instead of a proprietary dock is a nice plus. It probably doesn't have as many buttons as you'd like, however, but the dual scroll wheels are nice. I also like the ability to easily switch between free scrolling or line-by-line on the primary scroll wheel at the touch of a button.
-
I'll second the MX Master recommendation. I have the master 2 and the G602 and while they're both great mice I reach for the master 2 more often.
-
@6mt_ftw My G700 has the scroll wheel lock as well, and I have no need for a side scroll wheel (my spreadsheets just aren't that big). The buttons is the big one for me, lets me keep one hand on the space ball more and I can set multi-key shortcuts for any given button.
I also have 5 modes I can switch between but that gets messy for my use so I turn 4 of them off
