@beefchips That's really cool that you can help her out but still offer her freedom if it seems like the right choice. That's gonna be a toughy. Maybe a good way to gauge would be to see if she wants freedom. I mean, my cat ALWAYS wants her freedom, but she's not really skilled for outdoor life. She'd definitely maim a few dogs (maybe humans), but something would get her in the end. I know some people offer birds the choice; some stay and some leave.

@bison78 sure, so in principle squirrels can use a litter box. They are so-called latrine animals, with an instinct to separate their sleeping from their bathroom. People use litter and little ferret-sized litter boxes. What we are finding with Baxter is that she’s pretty good about peeing in there but she doesn’t really pay any attention at all to where she poops. But they are like rat turds, pretty hard and very easy to clean up. So I think I’d prefer those to being peed on.

Ugh, she poops all over lol. I have read that you can litter train squirrels because they are "latrine animals" ie won't go in or near their nest. In practice however this just seems to mean that she won't poop in her nest or on my body. Anywhere else seems to be fair game.

The good news is that squirrel poop is a lot like rat poop and very easy to clean up!

@kiltedpadre she’s shredding newspaper as a new hobby 😂 but so far she’s been content with the stuff we gave her. Next step is we have to teach her to drink water from the upside down gerbil water dispenser. She just ignores it so far!

@beefchips Such a cute little guy! Thanks for caring for him! I also do worry about him getting used to cats though...not sure he'd survive in the wild if any neighbourhood cats took to squirrel meat if he was released...

Nothing insightful to add here but to comment on how dastardly squirrels can get. The ones around here will approach my dogs and dance around just out of range because they just know that the human's not going to let go of the leash.
