      @WasGTIthenGTOthenNOVAthenGTInowA4 +1 I have a 11 year old Mac mini that is still completely functional. It’s my only home pc actually, and my F1 streaming device. I just bought a brand new one at work for testing and it’s faster than some of the $1500 plus dells I buy for $600

      Final update to the saga. I received reimbursement for the tow from AAA today.

      Fun fact! I have put 5600 miles on the van since this trip, which is wild since I'm avoiding driving it (it's parked at the back of the garage and blocked in by other cars) and I work from home so I don't go anywhere anyway.

      @jminer Oh, nice! $50 is a crazy deal considering that includes the screen, and everything (minus the Pi) - I made a custom 3D-printed / laser-cut case (based on one of Michael Klements' designs) for the Pi4 4GB that I got last fall and use it as my Home Theatre PC! I have it running Raspberry Pi OS with the TwisterOS UI on top (based on XFCE). It can play 1080p just fine in Chromium, though on 64-bit RPiOS there's no plugin for Netflix in Chromium....but you can just install and run the 32-bit version on the 64-bit OS and get the plugin that way! 🙂

      @EssExTee Agreed, I always stop and admire that taillight lens design when I see one of that gen Sonata Hybrid....one of those very cool little automotive easter eggs that they did not have to do, but did anyway. Looks gorgeous too...

      @dejock Yep, positive on the Instinct Solar 2 for $260-$300 -- the deals are rare and usually short, but using the SlickDeals app/site, you can get alerts. It's usually from BuyDig, Adorama, or another retailer you wouldn't normally associate with watches.

      I always take my watch off to shower and sleep, so even if I had better battery life, I wouldn't use the sleep tracking function. However, my watch charges fully in under 30 minutes, so if you're semi-diligent about it, it's really not much of an annoyance. I think it gets overblown in the reviews because people are comparing apples (haha) and oranges with these two watches. Coming from a completely neutral place, I have seen a lot of anti-Apple bias in some of the comments, as well as from my hardcore ultrarunning friends. It's easy to hate them, I did it for years, and I still don't use their laptops, ecosystem services, iCloud -- I just have a few of their products because they're easy and predictable.

      I were capable of running 100 miles, I would buy a Garmin...because the Apple would be dead in about 6 hours with active GPS tracking 🙂 And I'd probably be flat on my back calling 911.

      @jminer MechE here:

      Fusion360 Free CAD software for hobby use, complete with some CAM as well. If Onshape had a similarly robust desktop program and integrated CAM, I'd probably use that instead, but Fusion360 is hard to beat for the price. (I use Inventor for the real job, but I know I wouldn't be willing to pay for it for myself.)

      Inkscape A fairly simple and free graphics program that can import .ai and export .dxf. It's a huge help when a graphics designer gives you a file that they want built into a real world part. It can even do image tracing, so you can still make picture files into functional 2D CAD. (It can also convert CAD made PDFs into dxfs really easy, but it tends to make circles into splines. Still great for referencing and getting (estimated) dimensions.)

      Otherwise, everything else I often use is already mentioned.

      @jminer And I thought I was being a little over cautious when I put off trying Linux when my older laptop completely died leaving me without a secondary system up and running with Windows in case Linux gave me trouble. Looks like I made the right decision!

      @nowhere It showed up yesterday and I played with it a bit today. There are definitely some issues with it being a small company but impressed so far.

      The bios is a bit clunky compared to most modern ones and my machine didn’t charge or boot at first due to an issue with the 3.06 version of bios on it and that required pulling the cmos battery for 15 minutes then it worked. That was super easy to do compared to a modern laptop, I had to do that on an XPS 15 once and it required removing the mainboard and taking the laptop like 80% apart.

      Got that fixed and installed windows so I could easily flash the BIOS to the fixed version though then put POP OS on it and have been playing around with it and enjoying it.

      Another vote for Linux Mint. I do recommend getting the new 20.3 which will be official any day now. The older 20.2 is good, but will need many update packages. I'm running the 20.3 Beta Cinnamon. I prefer Cinnamon, because there are more gui tools there. XFCE is a good lightweight version, but is missing some gui tools stuff. Mate version seems in between to me. You can get all the ISO's and test them live boot USB before picking one to install.
      I've got the Cinnamon version on a really pathetic old acer notebook and it still runs it, just slowly.
      Good luck
