@duurtlang Oh the 340 is very much a '70s car, but I figured the facelift brought it kicking and screaming into the '80s well enough to slot alongside the others since it lived such a long life as you mention.

It's interesting that Volvo really kind of allowed the Dutch division to run somewhat independently for those few years as the 400 Series was still quite DAF despite moving to a more conventional FF layout. Volvo seemingly treated the Dutch division as their version of Autobianchi in terms of testing the waters of transverse packaging. Even the NedCar S40 was a fairly Dutch project, and I wonder how much of that Benelux legacy lived on with the Ghent-built P1 cars and now the CMA XC40s even though the NedCar plant itself is no longer Volvo affiliated.

They might. But only if they try to bat with the Hilux and Ranger in their pricing (unless they are clearly dynamically superior...#unlikely) and bat with the Chinese with their human interfaces and vehicle dynamics.

Which they aren't at the moment and why the Triton is a top ten seller and the third most popular of its segment... despite not being as good as the Isuzu/Mazda twins.

Those MSP were limited production as well at 4500 total. I can't think any more than few hundred at this point.

@amoore100 Mostly had to do with the technology aspects of it like the suspension and active aero things. The driveline itself is pretty bulletproof, but its kind of cramped when it needs to be worked on.

@Violet I like the Elysion as an Elgrand/Alphard competitor (I guess that'll have to be a People's Choice someday... 😉 ), but it's nowhere near as fashionable as this Odyssey!

I do think it's interesting, though, since the Elysion is much more of a counterpart to the North American Odyssey than the international Odyssey due to its sliding doors and V6, yet it still manages to be much shorter and narrower than the gen2 North American Odyssey-based LaGreat that it replaced for the JDM.

@Violet Awesome! I've come across a few piecemeal CAR comparos on Flickr here and there and they're always a great read, so I'm really glad to have that link you posted with all of them organized! I used to subscribe to CAR but I've realized there's really no point since all my modern car news comes through the internet anyway, so I changed it to Classic Cars which I find a little fuddy-duddy. After Modern Classics went down I was floundering for a good magazine for a bit, but now I'm subscribed to Classic.Retro.Modern. which seems to be exactly what I want!

@amoore100 I read somewhere – and forgot the exact wording – that the Freeclimber has all the disadvantages from the three countries involved; Japanese styling with German reliability and Italian something.

My father originally wanted the Montero / Pajero, but he thought the turbocharged engine was too complex and could pose reliability issues in the future, so he went with the Daihatsu, because it's equipped with that relatively understressed 2.8 liter naturally aspirated diesel.

However, the odds are against it. The latest remote start deactivation scandal by Toyota is an indication of things to come.
Mitsubishi could gain loyal customers by coming up with something new and creative like this and supporting it long term. Most likely some of their idiot corporation bean counters will convince them to make it an expensive added cost option with a short free update period and expensive subscription payments.
Therefore, doomed to failure. Google will probably make a better one anyway.

Approximately 50% of the reason for deleting power steering is that you can't have belt squeal if you don't have a belt!

I found a part number on the internets for the tensioner spring assembly. It has been superseded twice since then and all three part numbers are discontinued. My original one and the one on this 2ZZ are in good shape so I didn't dig further.

@pip-bip there is a resemblance, and I don't believe the final or near final R50 was shown publicly until 2000, so Nissan and Rover must have just independently settled on the same general theme
