My wife's car 2015 outback runs basically a 0w40. Uoa come back great along with iso numbers. Doesn't use any oil. My WRX runs on essentially a 5w50. Again, numbers come back great.
Many manufacturers will spec a thicker grade oil in Europe and then a thinner one in the US. The engines come from the same source with no difference in build.
20 weight oil may be acceptable, but it isn't good.
