I've never thought HO slot cars were superior. When I was a kid 1/32 was what we had.

@drVanTraveler My parents brought me home from the hospital in a '74 Celica GT. I was around 2 or 3 when they traded it on a '78 Olds. Even then I knew it was a bad move.

@wheelerguy Yeah, my rule here is that I can only buy stuff that I'd never be able to find outside of Japan. There are so many hobby stores here that you can always find something unique. That D1 AE86 diecast was like $15 which I thought was a lot until I looked them up on ebay and saw they normally go for around $150

My source for brushes runs from Michael's to Target to, believe it or not. Dollar Tree. They will have packs of decent brushes that can be considered disposable for crafts.

I'll get some of the brush in a bottle. I have plenty of super glue, and I buy the squeeze bottle you show preferentially, but I'm so ham fisted, I often use too much. I'll need to be extra careful, because these models are important to me.

Some Hot Wheels cars have no business having a staggered setup, but this is not one of them. Looks perfect!

@Camshaft_Chris I'm well, thanks. How have you been? I've been lurking here for a while with the occasional post now and then. I followed the Kinja LaLD migration to Drive Tribe and then here. I'm trying to downsize my collection and just focus on customizing (at my level, of course. I'll never compete with the real talent here...) and keeping only my absolute favorites by each maker.
The local flea market scene is dead, which is just as well. I spent years collecting parts cars for my customs, now it's time to use them. Be well!

You can see in this pic my new scratchbuilt (styrene, flat brass, brass rod, brass wire, paper) front radar tower, with a new SPS-6B radar that I made from the existing radar unit's frame and some extra wire and metal from the photo-etch sheet.

Naturally, I stole the photoetch ladder and two little light mounts and a "banana" antenna from the existing tower, and a dish from a spare AA fire director for the SG-6B.

You can also see the "hedgehog" spigot mortars on the front decks which replaced the Oerlikons. Also scratchbuilt (styrene, brass wire, paper).

I think I'm done scratchbuilding and just have to finish things out and paint. Thank fuck.

The pics I added were from 1962 from a trial that lasted 12 months with the stick out indicators being apparent from as early as the first units in 1959.
from 1959 onwards, the TK had a number of indicator light units I've found, from stick out orange units, combined indicator and side light in a small vertical rectangle units to these few that for some reason had headlights and side lights on the front, with no visual provision for indicators.

@fintail Matchbox made them too, an early run and then this one. Don't know the exact scale, it says 1:64 on the bottom, but don't think that is right, definitely oversized compared to most Matchbox, Hot Wheels, etc.

Sadly no opening trunk (boot? engine cover?)

Edit my own post: looks like the early Matchbox version was the breadvan version with the higher rear buttresses. I don't have one.

I picked up a few today! My choices were Tesla, ID4, E-Tron, Mach-E, a couple others. Not great selection but not empty shelves.

@HotWheelsAndFriedChicken I was thinking it could make an interesting custom - not particularly rare, so no harm in doing up a playworn model, but at the same time, it's an oddball design/shape, so customs may be limited.

@Just-Jeepin I do feel like quality control has good down, and obviously plastic bottoms are a downgrade but it is wild to think that Hotwheels are the same price they were when I was a kid. Especially compared to something like Lego.

@HotWheelsAndFriedChicken I looked these up, there is a Matchbox Wiki, I didn't know that. Apparently Alfa only let Matchbox paint them in white and red, because those were the factory colors. I didn't know small diecast production got so deep into licensing issues/restrictions.

@fintail I have a red ambulance version of this one from childhood. I've had it as long as I can remember. It's pretty beat up too. It's kinda buried right now, or I'd post a picture of it. I should get a nice version too, to go with it.

@ibRAD I've actually got the cars and parachutes from this set in my collection. I also have the parachute traps somewhere.
