They were hardly Aston’s little sibling - back in the glory days they were about 5x the size of Aston and Ferrari combined, going mano a mano with both of them on the track, and selling you a big-ass luxury saloon for the other slot in your coach-house at the same time.

Though I agree mano a mano with Ferrari (and to a lesser extent Aston) is where they should be going again, rather than chasing Bentley. It’d separate them from other brands in the Tata stable, and super/hyper/GT cars are likely to be the last survivors of the SUVpocalypse. It’d take a shitload of money and talent to make it happen, but Tata has the cash and the UK isn’t short of engineering talent in that niche. The CX75 was a huge missed opportunity to set them off in that direction, IMO.

Which is an idea that’d tailor well with @nickhasanexocet ‘s one of selling them to Rimac. A Ferrari rival would slot neatly under Bugatti.

So lightning does strike twice. The second Jag Super V8 Portfolio sold for $170k seemingly to the underbidder on the one last week.

A bit of research says the Portfolio spec Super V8 is pretty rare with only 70 being sold in the States. Even so these are huge premiums over a regular XJ or XJR of this era and the price is probably around MSRP once adjusted for inflation to today’s money.

@Bloody-the-resident-LandRover-apologist I made a set myself in case my cousin wanted to use some, but I never got around to sourcing motorcycle style signals to go on the sides.
I was looking at a lens swap to be able to use a dual-element bulb on the front - marker/parking and signal, but he ended up just doing that in the normal location (we had some NOS single-marker OEM fender fronts).

Obviously FB marketplace is evil and listens in to all my idle thoughts, as another black x308 XJR popped up today. It's more money and has some questionable (but probably easily reversible) mods but overall looks to be in better shape than the first.

Also no mention in the ad but it looks to be dechromed I'm not sure if that was an option or if this was done aftermarket, but these look better with the chrome window surrounds and bumper tops IMO.

Now someone please take FB marketplace away from me before I do something my wife regrets ;).

@Britishvillaininatl I had a rattle from back there as well, it was the cargo cover on the lip it rests on - I got it fixed with a few strips of adhesive backed foam.

@WBizarre We'll know EVs really have arrived when manufactures feel confident enough to regularly just give them normal names. There are a few, but the industry isn't quite ready to consider them "just another car" yet.

love this. those cars are like shrink wrapped. everyone knows they've got that big engine and heaps of weight, but it's a bit hard to fathom how small they are.
i mean they aren't tiny. just smaller than you'd expect from the big bad bug

Hard call between manual ATS-V coupe and a non-QV Giulia. Somehow the 400 odd HP Caddy seems (barely) reasonable while the 500HP Alfa seems like a car that I couldn't daily.

Would be 100% all in on the Alfa if they had made a 2 door version though. The world would be a much more fun place if we got all the models on Sergio's Investor day presentations

Also, anyone else think the Giulia trims are getting desperate. Used to be The base, Ti and QV.

Then the Ti could be a Ti Lusso or Ti Veloce

Somewhere (honestly, maybe at launch?) the base became the sprint.

By 2022 there was no more Ti Lusso, but the Veloce was a different trim than the Ti.

And for 2023 they have Sprint - Ti - Veloce - Estrema - QV. There are 2 engine choices, each with only one transmission. The four 4-cylinder trims all have exactly the same drivetrain and a random mix of standard equipment. With no description of why they exist. Why?

@Britishvillaininatl I think Ferraris are at that sweet spot where the 20-40 year old models are incredibly expensive to keep up and not always worth it (compared to a newish Lambo, which I see pretty regularly, and shares a lot of part with Audi).

Even if you have a good mechanic, if he's on the other side of Atlanta, your entire day is now spoken for 🙂

@phenotyp Yeah I think playing around with the app a bit a lot more people have done inputs based on the E type than the other cars I tried so maybe the A.I. has more data points to work with.

@Britishvillaininatl I have Nitto Motivos on mine. They seem fine? When they need to be replaced I will likely be going with another all season tire. No matter what, it won't be Pirellis, I really don't care for how they wear or feel after having two different models on two different cars.

I would get some good summer tires, but I don't feel like dealing with the expense and hassle of swapping tires or wheels depending on the season.

@drVanTraveler interesting in the U.K. the XE seemed to come with a quite a confusing choice of specs with either a standard or R dynamic body style and either body style had S, SE or HSE trim packages. All of that with a choice of three engines a diesel four plus a petrol four in two horsepower tunes. However when you dug into it the base S package came with everything you might need so the SE and HSE were not really worth the upgrade. I ended up buying an S R Dynamic with the Diesel engine. I wanted a petrol but the dealer couldn’t get me a petrol when I wanted it.

One inch less of ground clearance and three inches taller overall suggests four more inches of vertical car.

as it currently stands, if I were to go electric it'd be the ipace, it looks alright (even though I typically hate crossover/SUVs) as anything cheaper than that sucks on range and/or performance, Tesla's even the model 3 seem to be more pricey (2nd hand)

@ZHP-Sparky-the-5th yeah I worked as a locksmith in sf in college. We did some automotive work when they mangled door locks or columns but the stories we got from people were always crazy. Crackheads do crazy things. Even if they thought it was a first aid kit they would steal it, there's still some value. I used to have the city fire department key to all the Knox boxes (pretty sure I shouldn't have but my boss was shady as shit)

@amoore100 I agree that the Rover 75 was classy af and did it so much better than contemporary Jags, but I still reckon if they'd taken some P6, or even SD1 inspiration, it may not have dated so quickly.

@WBizarre You do very good work, and I always love seeing it. I used to do design requests, way back, but I get the unable-to-keep-up feeling. Your morphs are always a joy.

Also, I'm struggling to think of a Jaaaaaaag that I like. One of my neighbors bought a gold V12 E-Type, now parked next to my space. Need to get pics up soon. It's just a giant gold dong.

@powered_by_howard Fun fact about the Morrie Minor: that raised strip along the middle of the hood is the result of Morris' management looking at Alec Issigonis's finished styling buck and telling him the car was too narrow to comfortably seat 4. So he ran a saw through the centre of the buck, moved the halves apart 4" and filled it in. As a result of which Minors have a 4" wide flat strip down the middle which runs from nose to tail: the raised strip in the hood was originally just a narrow stiffening ridge. Early production ones even have a blanking plate in the middle of the bumper where they were cutting the actual part in half to widen it.
