I think that's reasonably accurate, but all three of the main Alabama plants are within 25-30 miles of a big city (Hyundai is actually in the Montgomery city limits). Both Hyundai and Mercedes are in historically blue counties with large black populations and higher-than-average poverty levels (Honda/Acura is in a poor, mostly white area). And our cities are all solid blue, excluding the suburbs, and very union-friendly.
The thing our manufacturers have done right is to offer comparable local union-level wages without the need for union dues and red tape. It's done pretty well so far, with relatively few union pushes by the workers. Meanwhile, Amazon is here for a couple years and already facing nonstop union efforts...maybe it really does have to do with how you treat your workers 🙂
