@Sam-Blockhan we had one of those at my college, ca 2008/2009, the grounds department had it but seemed to use it very rarely (trotted it out for the Earth Day event).

I was surprised the first time I saw it, because I had no idea you could get Microcars in the US, hadnt heard of the ZENN operation at that point, I think they did the conversions in Quebec

@DSM_OR_DIE My parents had his and hers 1982 (so the next generation after this) 5 door Civic hatchbacks. Gold and brown, both with manual transmissions - I think the 5 speed.

My dad won't admit it, but pretty sure he got a deal on the pair because they were the two ugliest colors on the lot.

The gold one lasted with us until 1991 or 1992. It was my older sister's first car, then if I recall she got a Mazda MX6.

I can't remember clearly, but I think we traded the brown one (my mom's) in for a yellow Mustang (non-GT, though I don't know what engine). It was literally a lemon. Doors that wouldn't latch, starting issues, etc. We had it less than a year before we got the 1982 Suburban with the 6.2 diesel that we kept until 1995.

@Ad-absurdum-per-aspera Remember you would only get 20 inches by the width of the door, the floor space on either side would just be more storage. Honestly, it was the right call. There are other places to get bigger boxes. The advantage of using the stock Land Cruiser chassis is that you get really tidy dimensions in length and the "golden wheelbase" that the land cruiser has had for 30 years and works amazingly well for all types of off-roading.

Sure its not going to be as commodious as a powerwagon 8 foot bed with an arctic fox on the back, but this is meant for global travel, which means it needs to fit inside a standard shipping container and be light and nimble, not ponderous.

And now that I live in a climate that’s amenable all year I’m actively looking for one (at a reasonable price).

The electric one looks cool but I’m hesitant to put down a deposit with no idea of the purchase price.

@Ad-absurdum-per-aspera The first 4-5 times I saw a Clarity (not in CA), I thought it was ONLY hydrogen and I freaked out a bit.

Then I realized that the 2018 model year (plug-in hybrid) was sold outside of CA on a limited basis. In fact, I came close to buying one last year from Carmax. It was just a little too much compromise between an Accord and Civic, and not quite as nice a car as either one of them (outdated infotainment, lack of common parts, etc). Plus even at 4+ years old, it was still selling for the price of a new one from 2018, less the rebate. Just rubbed me the wrong way...but not a bad car at all. Needed a hatch instead of a trunk.

@Sam-Blockhan TIL they made Alero coupe. We got the sedan as Chevrolet in Europe. First ones still retained all the Olds badging so they weren't even rebadges per se. Later they got Chevy badges stuck on black plastic oval covering the area under the Olds logos.
For some reason I kinda of want a Prizm GSi. We never got the sedan Prism/Sprinter here but we did get the hatch badged as Corolla. No 4age in that iirc though.

It's possible this thing was running leaded fuel, which smells a little different, albeit illegal on the road (in most states?). I can't say it's much worse than unleaded though without a cat. Now, if it was running nitro methane, that's a whole different story, that stuff does burn the eyes but I've never seen someone dumb enough to run nitro on the street and it'd be quite loud, which you were saying this wasn't. Maybe it was alcohol? Again, rare on the road I would think, not sure about sound for alcohol.

Not that you asked but that looks like a '70. My least favorite Dart is this year and forward. '67-'69 are much better looking, especially from the rear 3/4 shot.

      That's a '67. I like the '68 because of the round sidemarkers.
For the later ones, they had it well sorted in '72...

@ash78 rolling is actually more pronounced than what I'm used to. Yeah, these huge liners are smoother but the rolling is more pronounced since they're so tall. The roll center is still down near the water so people on the upper decks feel more motion.

@ttyymmnn I do have to say, he always did come off as very charismatic, I mean, you could see why they used him as a spokesman, in the '70s and '80s.

Supposedly, OJ was in the running to play the Terminator, and James Cameron nixed it on the grounds that he was too much of a nice guy and people wouldn't believe him as an intimidating villain.

Its a what made the murder trial so shocking to a lot of people, his public persona was so completely different from what people thought of as someone capable of doing something like that. Of course, both ex wives had made allegations of physical abuse, but that had been pretty well swept under the rug, the public was largely unaware of that

      Future Next Gen S2000 Owner

@RacinBob Monthly tests are dictated by NFPA 110 but whether or not that is followed......... They have a whole schedule listed out. I'd bet those are 1 or 1.5 mW units, give or take. Especially if they are for a hospital. They'd be classified as emergency unit with a 0 to 100% load assumption within 10 seconds.

Hp for a modern unit for something of that size is about 1500 hp. Fuel burn rates are 83 gals per hour. They could be a big bigger. It does look just like the engine but its hard to tell. A lot of the structure appears to be a belly tank.

Brand, I have no idea. Could be a Cat, Cummins, Kohler, or a manufacturer that no long makes them. John Deere built some but I think they just do engines now.

Biggest one I've specced is a 2.5 mW unit while most are in the 100-350 kW range. They get really pricey above that size.

The other aspect is EG set not have to meet certain emission requirements related to state and run time, classification......It may not be possible to find a location where you could get the permit to install them.

@Ad-absurdum-per-aspera Most fleet trucks are governed to a max speed almost exclusively for fuel consumption reasons. Saving even 1 MPG can equate to significant savings when considering 10-15 MPG on a fully loaded truck is extremely good. In the best of scenarios (15 MPG) saving 1 MPG is a 6% difference.

Source: My dad used to work in the trucking industry managing a fleet of trucks and was always trying to squeeze every ounce of fuel out of them.

Someone on a MB forum even found a California emissions label on one 🕵

Mercedes actually did plan on selling them here but pulled out at the last minute due to exchange rates making it more difficult to sell them here. Therefore, the W245 is legal to bring down here. Supposedly, the owner's manual says it's certified to the standards of Canada, the US, and California ☺

The second gen W246 should be easy to bring down here because we got the electric one. Although we didn't get the gas engine version, it probably has an EPA label under the hood 🤔 🕵

Looking real quick on kijiji, this was the best under-hood pic I could find of a second-gen where the labels are visible.

However, the W246 is slightly less cool because it's automatic-only (and it's actually a DCT), turbo-only, the sunroof is less cool (modern two-panel shit where only the front one opens, whereas the first-gen sunroof is a 5-panel lamella roof and the entire thing opens, like the Pontiac G6)

The electric B that we actually got down here sucks because it wasn't available with a sunroof, and the electric motor comes from Tesla, and it isn't the most reliable ⚡ 😈

Yes, the B-Class is more popular than people give it credit for, it's cool, and MB made a mistake by not selling it down here 🙃

Geometrically, I think that is the nature of corners, but aesthetically, I get what you are saying. This car had a rather Veblenian message to the world, taking up an amount of space for aesthetic and personal-profile reasons all out of proportion to actual cabin space (not to mention being an unapologetically conspicuous consumer of rather a lot of gasoline to transport, usually, one or two people). At the time you still did that by sitting low to the ground and looking out upon the commoners across a lot of hood, though I suppose luxury SUVs are more the thing now.

@KAC -- It's the kind of shuttle bus I'd expect to see in the US for taking people between the airport and off-site parking or the rental-car center, or between a large workplace and the local transit ganglia. Definitely not a route-running sort of transit bus rather than just being semi-abandoned.

That is an odd evocative interior tableau -- some kind of tool or equipment case and a jug of some automotive fluid just lying on the floor. Reminds me of a picture someone posted of a British automotive factory with dusty never-to-be-finished cars on the assembly line, and tools plainly just left where they had been put down at the time of closure...

      @way2blu
Car stuff in Scotland isn't my thing.
Other than visit some museums in Edinburgh or hire a car and drive around a loch (as suggested by someone else).
About 25 miles West North West of Edinburgh, is Falkirk and the Falkirk Wheel. Used to lift and lower canal boats along the way.
      3fc82f3e-0486-45b4-b74b-74b9f2148385-image.png
      0214404d-c9e1-4a06-8806-a9c324807312-image.png
Take the M8 from Edinburgh, then take a right onto the M9 and follow it for about 14 miles and then follow signs for Falkirk Wheel.
From there you could head toward the A803 and then the A883 towards the M876 heading South West. Track onto the M80 and then M8 towards Glasgow, stop for a night or two in a hotel, then take in some of the sights of Glasgow. By mindful of pickpockets and scammers (like with any big city).
If you want to head back to Edinburgh, head north out of Glasgow then take the M8 east and it'll take you straight back to Edinburgh.
Instead of heading back to Edinburgh, you can take the A82 North West out of Glasgow, follow it round to the right, up and round Loch Lomond, when you get to Crianlarich, take a right onto the A85. Now as you follow it round you can take a left, staying on the A85 which will take you the northern route over Lock Earn.
From there you can follow it to Perth.
Then from Perth simply take the M90 south going to Edinburgh.
On the final 10 miles, you may want to take a left off the M90 at junction '1B' and onto the A900.
The A900 goes over the Forth Road Bridge, which is closer to the Forth Bridge
      7373c836-2f72-444a-9035-f6e7c9f5b082-image.png
(staying on the M90 would be easier for you, but the view of the Forth Bridge would be obstructed by the Forth Road Bridge from the M90's Queensferry Crossing bridge.
