When I was young, early 90s, a young woman relative had an 80-81 Cordoba with the same vinyl top. It was a $600 beater then, but did have a button tufted rich corinthian leather interior. It was actually in decent shape, but the 318 lean burn was a pain in the butt.
When I was in grade school, a schoomate's mom had a white CMX with t-tops, I thought that was cool.
According to the books I've read they splashed molds off of a KG and then modified the molds - the body was all their own fiberglass work and it had a specially built box section aluminum frame. Judging by photographic evidence they ditched the front grille and significantly toned down the tailights and bumpers after this prototype too.

I remember working with a young man who owned a pager around then; everyone assumed he must be a drug dealer because doctors and drug dealers were the only people who needed to be reachable at all times.
