@functionoverfashion Lemme tell ya that pro sailing is tough and boring. But to get a taste, start by beer can racing at your local club. A 6-pack will get ya on a boat. Learn how to make the boat go faster. If you stick with it, folks'll ask you to go on the longer races. Offshore weekends and such. These can be done with a family as far as you want. A lot of the lower level pros have regular jobs; they get expenses to sit in wet closes and get bounced around.

Haha, thanks, I'm sure it's not glamorous! I raced dinghies in college, that was a blast, but very limited scope.

I live near a small lake, there's a lightning regatta every week and I've always wanted to get involved. It's just been a matter of time, with a young family. I hope to get into that in the next few years.

@distraxi My parents used to have a pair of land sailers, though I never saw them used and by the time they got rid of them they had required a ton of refurbishment to operate. They were '70s tube frame pieces.

All of the pictures I find of them online are almost always far more rinkadink or far more refined. But it looks like a fun sport.

@darkbrador I dunno, I suspect they might have slapped the wrong stickers on. Unexpected actuation of control surfaces leading to violent pitch oscillation and eventual crashes sounds more Boeing than Airbus to me.

I want that so badly, but like I said I expect it would break every other part on my f-i-l's Laser, so I'd have to buy another one. I'm not ruling that out though.

@st80mnd Me neither. Knew they could be righted pretty easily (major design feature relative to the cats) - didn’t know how. I guess the lift from the immersed foil must do it.
